There’s little point beating about the bush, Football Manager 2005 is a staggering achievement and the finest football management game ever to appear on any format. Its success, ultimately, is down to the fact that it pulls off a spectacularly tricky balancing act. On one hand, there’s a gigantic database of teams, players and statistics with staggering depths of detail; and on the other is an extremely user-friendly interface that always puts you at the heart of the game, and allows you to easily and succinctly use the vast reservoirs of tools and options at your disposal. It might be putting things simply, but the two have been married up to create a standout game.

But then all this is hardly a surprise. Football Manager 2005 has been created by the team behind the Championship Manager series, and whilst they no longer have the rights to use the brand name, the actual game’s origins are never in question. Frankly, there are so many improvements, it’s impossible to scratch the surface of them.

So we’ll focus on two. The media section really hangs together properly for arguably the first time, with intriguing options that allow you to play mind games with other managers for instance. And the match day segment has come on at speed, with a smooth and useful highlights option that feels far more natural and integrated than previously.

Does it have flaws? The odd one or two, which are minor niggles caused more as a result of extreme ambition on the part of the developers rather than sloppy work. Yet the real worry is the amount of time the game will sap. Make no mistake, for any armchair football fan who has ever dreamed of taking their team to glory, Football Manager 2005 will rob them of months of their life. Well what can you say about this game, Sports Interactive the inventors of Campionship Manager have now ditched the ball and chain of Eidos and are now with Oldies SEGA.

The game is basically "Champ 5" without the name (Eidos own the rights to the name Championship Manager so don't buy champ 5) Championship Manager 5 has been made by a new team without the legendary database SI have created over the years.

SI's new Football Manager, it's champ with better match play, more interactiveness and a much better match engine!

It's much better than CM03/04 and more addictive (I finished the six months on the demo in the first week!!).

Visual effects are awesome with Player pics and fully up to date transfers. SI have proven that they are the monopoly on management sims not eidos and I have had this game on order for months!!

If you liked Champ you'll love FM2005, remember this is the game for the "champ" faithful and SI understand what Football means. There will be thousands of fans creating utilities for the game.

IT'S SIMPLE BUY FM 2005 bye bye championship manager!!!!

As has been written below, Football Manager is the new name for the old 'Championship Manager'. Having played a demo of this I can confirm that the best has indeed got better.

No football management sim can touch this series, and year upon year the producers create a better and better game.

I have played this series right from the original Championship Manager, and it the most addictive game I have ever played!

Do not buy this game if you have a family, pets, a job, or to sum up, this game will take over your life, even eating and drinking will become secondary nature as you will sit in front of your pc for days just tinkering with formations and searching for that 20 goal a season wonder buy from non league.

This update is not just a renewed player list, the match engine and game screens have been re-written, with more interaction, and you can even enter the mind game playing with opposition managers.

I am currently storing food like a bear so that by the time the full game comes out I will be able to stop in for months!!

A must have purchase for any self respecting football fan.

Truely the best and most addictive football sim game I've ever played. Unless you set an alarm to remind you to eat, you'll waste away as you sink into 'just one more match' over and over again. Designing wierd and wonderful tactics is fun, winning matches is great, but what I find fulfilling is battling against the odds to take a low league or conference club into the premiership and europe, and winning all four titles.

Another great challenge is taking on the England team (you will be offered the job - what a feeling to be deemed good enough!) and playing (alongside your league team matches) all the qualifiers, the Euros and the World Cup. After winning the World Cup I was offered the Argentina managers job but turned it down because I would have had to give up my England squad who I was keenly redeveloping with some new unknowns.

My advice is buy this game, it's fantastic
