4.0 out of 5 stars Fittipaldi's rise to the top., 23 Sep 2009

(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
1972 marked a major milestone in F1 - the rise of the sponsor. This DVD review of the 1972 season shows us how the tobacco sponsorships which were to have a lasting impact over several decades, changed the appearance of the sport. The most obvious example being the famous rebranding of the Lotus team cars - the John Player Special.

The preceding DVD showed us how Jackie Stewart dominated the season in a car which shouldn't have seen him at the front of the pack, and 1972 looked good for him after cruising to a comfortable win in the first race. Unfortunately for him though, the new Tyrrell steered like a cow and he had to return to the old car whilst it was tweaked. Although still in contention for the championship - he wasn't the only one and it was Emerson Fittipaldi who took the championship in the John Player Special. The newer Tyrrell did start to perform though and it gave the team hope for the following year.

If you've seen the previous two DVDs then you'll know that Lotus were in turmoil after the death of their world championship driver Jochen Rindt in 1970, but '72 saw a turn-around for them and the film footage on this DVD shows us that Rindt's widow was present for some of the celebrations.

As with the other DVDs, the footage is only partially that of actual races, and you get fair amount of behind the scenes 'action'. I like this aspect of this DVD collection though as it brings the viewer something of the spirit of the sport during that time. Listening to Jackie Stewart talk to his engineers about his car gliding and 'not biting' the road reminds us that the technology may have been very different to today - but the cars still had the same issues! And in one brief moment we see Graham Hill noticing the camera filming him and he gives it a cheeky wink, that gives us a bigger impression of the character behind the name than any amount of narrative could.

In a nutshell: The dodgy music is back! And the grainy footage may not provide hours of racing action but it gives us a good idea of what was happening as we see cars spinning and coping with spray on the track. I don't feel that Fittipaldi was given the time he deserved though - the championship battle was tackled from the angle of Jackie Stewart ,and it would have been nice to have had more of an emphasis on Fittipaldi and his acheivements this season. This DVD is best viewed alongside the others as there is a general sense of a story - a journey introducing new characters where we can see them develop and make a name for themselves as they come forward from the background.

3.0 out of 5 stars the beginning of modern F1, 13 May 2009
By F. L. P. Souza (Amstelveen, The Netherlands) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a nice overview of the transition from F1's "heroic" years to the mega-million business it has become. There could have been more interviews with some of the protagonists (they are still around)and more racing action shots, but in those days F1 TV broadcasts were just beginning, so I guess there's not that much material available. Still, a good overall view of the 1972 season is provided, though I thought they did not give Fittipaldi as much credit as he deserved (the youngest champion, a record only broken over 30 years later by Alonso).
