4.0 out of 5 stars The return of The Flying Scotsman., 5 Aug 2009

(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
After a brief rundown of the years cultural events, the DVD gives a quick overview of the changes the season faces and reflects on the sad losses from the previous year. It's those deaths which put the focus on driver safety during 1971, and Jackie Stewart was one of the most vocal campaigners for change.

1971 seems to be a time of incredible variety with the cars - there are so many different shapes, from the classic pinched nose to flat fronts and the bizarre looking March car - and the designs change drastically throughout the season as new noses are tried in an attempt to emulate the success of the cars at the front of the grid. This makes the DVD a fascinating watch for those like me who never experienced any of this period in Formula 1 history.

This 1971 review makes for compulsive viewing because instead of a simple running commentary of events, there's real drama in Jackie Stewart's quest for a second world championship. His V8 engine should have meant he languished behind the V12s and battled amongst the other V8 cars - but he astonished everyone by continually dominating races. Even when he was pipped from the starting grid he would re-claim the lead at the first corners. Infact - he performed so well in an underpowered car that his fuel was inspected and his engine dismantled to check that he wasn't cheating!

There isn't a vast amount of race footage in this documentary which lasts for just under an hour, but the trackside video of drivers preparing for races and little racing action which does features does manage to give a good idea of the atmosphere and events of the time.

In a nutshell: As with the other DVDs in this collection, Ian Norris narrates and there is little passion in his voice, but there is a poetry to his words. The dodgy music and graphics remind you that this is created by fans of the sport and is to be enjoyed by others who wish to either relive or learn about this bygone age of great developments and characters in Formula 1.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, But Only Because There Is No Other Choice, 1 Sep 2008
By The Kinniburgh Kid (UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
These season reviews are great if, like me, you like seeing off-track footage as much as the action from the races because that is what they consist of mostly.

Limited to one or two cameras at each race, there is an inevitable concentration on practice sessions and interviews. Do not expect lots of overtaking, accidents or on-track action.

That said, there is no other way to get footage of these years and, assuming anyone who is thinking of buying something like this is already somewhat knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the era, these films are of great interest. The commentary is very good, making the most of the somewhat limited visuals.

The acid test is that I have watched them all, all the way through, more than once. The price is high for the duration (30mins per year) but as I said, there is no other option if you want video for this era.

3.0 out of 5 stars Jackie Stewart was a legend
I own many of these titles from the Brunswick archives and I am mostly pleased to have them, they are the only way to see the formula one scene as it was from 1970 to 1980. Read more
