Back in the late 1980s, in the beginnings of the "CD age", I bought a 10 song CD EMI released of Stokowski's Bach transcriptions. My main musical interest is rock, but I like classical music sometimes and I knew of Stokowski from the film _Fantasia_. I loved his transcription of "Toccata and Fugue in D Minor", so I bought the CD. The CD was really bad. The dynamic range was horribly compressed. There was so little stereo separation that for a while, I thought the tracks were all mono. For years, I thought that EMI probably had terrible engineers and stone age recording techniques.
Flash forward to several months ago, when I happened to read that the original CD, which I purchased, was made from an LP master. That explained the bad sound. I read that this new CD was properly made from the original tapes and the sound quality was excellent. This is truly how Bach was meant to be heard. The transcriptions are so good, it has hard to believe that these works weren't all originally written for orchestra. This release contains 1 additional song not on the original CD I bought years ago. I know now that EMI's engineers and recordings were as good as anybody else's at this time (late 1950's).
The bonus DVD contains 12 minutes or so of Stokowski conducting "Prelude a l'apres-midi d'un faune" on a BBC broadcast in 1972 at the age of 90. It's taken from a DVD with much more footage of Stokowski conducting. I really enjoyed seeing the master conduct and although he may have been old, he still had a vitality even at this age when he was at the podium.
