Tomtom Navigator 3 GPS MAPS and Car Kit, 22 Oct 2004
I bought TTN 3, as described, with TomTom Car Kit for Dell AXIM X5. Both units arrived on time, and were the cheapest I could find on the Net. The GPS Unit had a dodgy connection, I E-mailed TomTom, they said it would be collected from my home in Limerick, Ireland and returned within 10 days, the unit was returned repaired within 8 days, at no cost to me, five stars to TomTom for service. After receiving the repaired GPS unit I had no problems installing the software or hardware. I bought the kit for a specific purpose, a trip to the UK (Pembroke Dock, Wales to Clapham, London, and many other London locations). It worked superbly; avoiding the "congestion charge area" and when it announced, "you have arrived at your destination" I was outside the door of the address that I wanted to visit. With the package there is a Map of Major Roads of Europe, this is of very limited use, especially in Ireland (which is the only place that I have used it). It did managed to get me out of Dublin but by a very convoluted route. The major roads of Ireland have recently been upgraded with bypasses etc these are not shown. Therefore 5 stars for hardware (GPS unit and Car Kit), 5 stars for the Great Britain Map but 2.5 stars for the Major Roads of Europe.

Let down by poor mapping data, 16 Jan 2005
I have used TomTom navigation software for more than a couple of years now with Ipaq pocket PCs. The wired gps is much easier and more reliable to set up and use than the bluetooth version which I have now given up on. The older windscreen mounting kit with a flexible swan neck was much better than the current short version, which will not suit all screens. Screws on both types tend to work loose, it is worth supergluing them as the physical connection can fail at the most inconvenient times. The software is generally a pleasure to use. The voice guidance is clear and helpful, and rerouting if you deviate from the plan is quick and effective. It also provides a convenient way to calibrate the vehicle speedometer! There are however some bad errors in the mapping data. One of many examples; the one-way street information for Llanelli is incorrect making nonsense of much routing through the town. I had hoped that the move from version 2 to version 3 of the software would correct this, but it didn't. Most disappointing is the attitude of TomTom, who seem disinterested in error reports merely directing one to their data suppliers, who give no encouragement to reporting discrepancies. Navigation software is only as good as its' mapping data. Although some of the biggest errors in TomTom (as reported in other reviews elsewhere) have been corrected, others are perpetuated from version to version. In the absence of a user friendly error reporting system, or mapping of Ireland, I will be looking at other navigator software suppliers such as Navman or Garmin for future purchases.

If at first you don't succeed..., 10 Mar 2005
Having read plenty of reviews on the Tom Tom I opted for the wired version as many people were reporting that the Bluetooth version was unreliable.I set it up and waited for the satellites to pop up only to find that my Palm couldn't see the GPS antenna. "No GPS device." I had power to the car cradle, my palm and the antenna but for some reason it just wouldn't connect. This is apparently a well-known problem. Tom Tom, who were very quick to answer other questions have remained silent so far but a look on various GPS forums soon shows just how many people seem to have the same issue. There is plenty of advice about doing bodge fix-its, but my advice is don't do it. Send it back and get a new one. I received a replacement unit and it worked straight from the box. Now it's working it is spot on. Excellent accuracy, extremely easy to configure and use. Highly recommended as long as you get one that works. The only reason I haven't given it 5 stars is because of the initial problem getting a good unit.
