Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Tune into DAB and FM radio to enjoy a myriad of radio stations in crystal clear digital sound. The DA1000 offers fast, precise tuning through 20 preset stations with a handy joystick - all packaged in a sleek portable design.

DAB digital radio is a new way of broadcasting radio via a network of terrestrial transmitters. It provides listeners with more choice and information delivered in crystal clear, crackle-free sound quality.

The technology allows the receiver to lock on to the strongest signal it can find. With DAB digital stations there are no frequencies to remember, and sets are tuned by station name, so there's no retuning on the move.

Digital radio operation is made up of a single block of frequencies called a multiplex. Each multiplex works within a frequency spectrum, such as Band III for DAB broadcasts. If you buy a receiver in the UK it will be designed to pick up DAB signals on Band III only. You will receive only those stations within your transmission area.

Each DAB broadcaster (or multiplex operator) also provides text and audio data services. Some programmes are supported by Dynamic Label Segments (DLS). This is data which you can read as scrolling text on your DAB radio display. Some stations transmit the latest news, travel, and weather, what's on now and next, website addresses and phone numbers.

3.0 out of 5 stars Don't be fooled by the two battery benefit, 23 Sep 2004
The radio is great quality; intuitive menus, fab reception (in and around Cheltenham), great clarity. I swapped the Philips earphones, which are ok, for Sony MDR-EX71SLs. These seemed to hang onto good reception longer (probably because they are physically longer).

The major let down is the battery life. I get about 2 hours of DAB out of one charge. Other makes go for a three battery configuration; maybe Philips should have done the same.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't bother with this DAB, 6 May 2006
I bought one of these pocket DAB radios. For about ten days it worked just fine and then after about 10 minutes use it emitted a high pitched whine and stopped working. The only way to switch it off was to remove the batteries. Amazon were great in replacing the faulty radio but - guess what? - the replacement arrived and would not work! I switched it on, the display said "welcome", blanked out of all text but stayed illuminated and nothing else happened. Again, I had to remove the batteries just to switch the thing off. After getting two faulty units, I'm not going to give it a third try and I've asked for a refund.
Buy something else!

Bought this as a xmas present 2004 for my husband so that he could use it for work. He works on average 2/3 days per week and it has packed in. The on/off button no longer works, Philips won't repair or replace it and advise us to purchase one of their alternative models. Fat chance!
