Product Description

CD Description
While Masta Killa may be the last of the Wu-Tang Clan's nine original members to come out with a solo record, he does so in style. On the critically acclaimed PRETTY TONEY ALBUM, Ghostface opened by assuring the public that the Wu-Tang family was still intact and working on new material, but not one of the Staten Island crew made an appearance on that disc.Masta Killa's defiantly titled, long-awaited debut, NO SAIDDATE, features a reunion of sorts, boasting every single Wumember, and even bringing estranged cousins RZA and Ol' Dirty Bastard together on the funky "Old Man".
However, before the Wu-Tang gang starts making cameos en masse, Masta Killa reminds listeners that he didn't wait this long because he lacks talent of his own, and he opens the album with four strictly solo tracks. From the hazy funk of "Grab the Microphone", Killa launches into the brash, RZA-produced title track, which deftly turns the long-time-coming nature of the release on its ear ("'When ya droppin'? No said date?premeditated, calculated"). A welcome first outing by an often-overlooked Wu-Tang member, NO SAID DATE is a notable release for both Masta Killa and the entire Wu-Tang unit.

About the Artist
Masta Killa was first introduced to the world on the Wu-tang Clan hit "Da Mystery Of Chessboxin'" in 1993 from the classic album "Enter the 36 Chambers". Due to being incarcerated at the time, Killa was unable to appear on any other songs from this album, but that memorable verse was enough to secure him a starting position in the seminal supergroup The Wu-tang Clan. After his release, Masta Killa made appearances on every Wu-Tang Clan album, many solo Wu projects, as well as projects by Afu-Ra, Bounty Killer and Public Enemy. Masta Killa feels his time has finally come.

The most quiet and mysterious Wu-Tang member, Masta Killa rarely speaks during public appearances and interviews and very little is known about him. "I know I seem serious and quiet to a lot of the fans. That's because I take my work seriously. It's not a game. The Clan and I work hard to give you the best," says Masta Killa. "I'm bringing back that original Wu-tang sound. I'm bringing the family and fans back together like how everyone remembers...the whole Wu-tang movement. I know what they've been waiting for all these years any they won't be disappointed."

Sticking to the formula the fans loved, "NO SAID DATE" will be the first solo release by MK and the first by a Wu-Tang Clan member to stay entirely in-house for production in quite sometime, having been handled mostly by RZA, TRUE MASTER & ALLAH MATHEMATICS. While "NO SAID DATE" will finally shed light on the Wu's most-slept on chamber, it will also feature appearances from ALL the fellow Clansmen - METHOD MAN, GZA, GHOSTFACE, RZA, INSPECTAH DECK, U-GOD, O.D.B. and RAEKWON. In addition, "NO SAID DATE" will include a limited edition LIVE CD & DVD featuring Masta Killa performing songs from the album as well as past Wu classics. "NO SAID DATE" will be independently unveiled on NATURE SOUNDS later this year.

5.0 out of 5 stars Be water my friend, 3 Aug 2004
I'm sorry to just be saying the same as other reviewers, but its not very often that a classic like this comes along. I bought this album on its release date (June '04) when I was in America, and right from the first listen I absolutely loved it. But I waited until now to write a review as I usually find it takes a couple of months to truly appreciate an album, and the CD is as bangin' now as it was then.

Right from the start, MK hits you with an old-skool badly-dubbed Kung-fu skit that Wu fans of old have been dying for since Liquid Swords. It's usually a sign of a good Wu-Tang album, and when "Grab The Mic" comes on, it only cements the initial thought that this IS what we've all been waiting on. Over a really nice beat produced by Brock (who I've honestly never heard of), Masta Killa introduces the crowd to his album, literally - "Greetings ladies and gents/Good evening I'm your speaker for this evening". What follows is pure fire.
After this comes the title track and with it, something that too many Wu-tang albums have been missing recently, a banger by RZA. MK doesn't disappoint either as he makes this another bomb of a song.
The trend continues, and whether its the lyrical warning on "Last Drink" or the respect to his "Queen", Masta Killa doesn't drop an average verse on this album - They're all hot!
The fact that the entire Wu-Tang (and Killah Priest) is featured (first time since Liquid Swords?) on the album only adds to its brilliance.

RZA produces another 2 songs, the first video "Old Man" (featuring RZA and the ever-insane rants of Ol' Dirty) and "School" which also features RZA is one of my personal favourites on the album.
Most of the other production duties are handled by other 'in-house' Wu producers. Perhaps the most interesting song on the album is Choco's "Digi Warfare". A strange song, that REALLY grows on you if you give it time. A mix between Old-Skool and some Sci-fi techno ish, MK Kills the track like a Master.

The holy trinity of unrecognised Wu-Tang MCs reunites on "Silverbacks" when GZA and Inspectah Deck join Masta Killa to produce the type of track that even believers of these three could never imagine.

The album closes out with "Masta Killa" produced by Baby Dooks (another producer I've never heard of) and whether it's the sound of Bruce Lee talking about how water is the most powerful substance in the world between verses(from a film where his character was called "Master Killer"), the oriental tinged beat, Masta Killa dropping some of the best verses on the album or most likely the way it gels together, the album closes with one of the best tracks.

Everyone will have their favourites on this CD, but the truth of the matter is that there isn't a bad track, there isn't even one that you could refer to as "good", because that word just doesn't do justice to this album that can only be described as a Masta-piece.

5.0 out of 5 stars At last another Wu classic, 1 Jul 2004

I own every wu-tang album ever released and I can safely say that this one will soon no doubt be labelled as another wu-tang classic. Its up there with the likes of Cuban Linx and Liquid swords, and to be compared to these classics is no easy feat, but Masta killah has done it!I am a huge fan of the old Wu sound and this is one of very few albums released in recent years to satisfy my wants. If you are a Wu fan, BUY THIS NOW!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars The best Wu album for years., 9 Jan 2006
By J. W. Bassett (Kent, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Only the most ardent Shaolin monk would disagree that the Wu Tang symbol has lost some of its lustre in recent years. Odd then, that it should take an album from the quietest member, and the only one who hasn’t previously released a solo album, to reignite the whole group.

Par for the Wu course, there are guest spots from Ghostface, Method Man, Raekwon and Gza (all as good as you would expect), but this is very much Killa’s party. The production from Rza (whose rejigging of Outkast’s Skew It On The Bar-B on the title track ranks among his best work) is exemplary and the Wu chieftain even manages to pilfer samples from the themes of Sanford & Son and Cheers. Elsewhere, Mathematics and True Master are close to their best on cuts like Secret Rivals and Last Drink. In fact, the whole thing sounds like it came from the Wu’s 1994 heyday, which seeing as many of these tracks have been cocooned for over a decade, isn’t all that surprising.

That’s not to say there isn’t some degree of innovation, Digi Warfare, D.T.D. and School all broaden the Wu canon with a selection of vicious beats.
