5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific stuff, 31 Jan 2009
I couldn't disagree more. Rabinovitch may not be the finest conductor but he doesn't get in the way of his thrilling soloists and there is no overindulgence for once from Maisky . Capucon is excellent and Argerich quite superb in the piano part .

In my opinion , there is no one to touch Argerich in the Schumann - her other performances are equally marvellous .

Five stars !!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the finest version of the Triple Concerto, 1 Jan 2005
By Budge Burgess (Kilmarnock, Scotland) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
Beethoven's Triple Concerto for violin, cello and piano was written in 1804, after his deafness had plunged him into the depths of depression and at a time when he had begun to rediscover both his confidence and his desire to express himself. It is a work which will tug at your emotions on many levels. A gentler piece of music than the symphonies, it has no less depth and power. The balance and contrast of the three solo instruments demands concentrated listening.

We are presented here with three accomplished soloists - Martha Argerich, Renaud Capucon, and Mischa Maisky - in what appears to be a live performance (certainly there is a round of applause at the end). However, the recording gives no sense of the immediacy and vibrancy of a live performance, and the balance between soloists and orchestra seems a touch flaccid. In other recordings of the Triple, the emotion flows between the soloists and the orchestra and sweeps you up in its dynamic. I'm afraid this version leaves me a little untouched.

The choice of the Schumann piano concerto as the second half of the CD is also something of a disappointment. Schumann, for me at any rate, doesn't have the same passion and emotion as Beethoven, so there is a loss of balance here. The Triple Concerto lasts 35 minutes - you feel that editors have to find another half hour of music to offer their public, and maybe some other recordings of the Triple have already pinched the best options.

All in all, I'm afraid I found this quite a bland offering, one which is emotionally neutered. If the Triple Concerto is what you want to hear, perhaps you should compare this to other recordings.
