You really can't go wrong with this cracking new recording of the glorious piano concerto. Havard Gimse, Bjarte Engeset and the RSNO combine beautifully, with Gimse giving a sublime performance, particularly in his delicate handling of the adagio. The orchestra and conductor are also on fine form, injecting just the right amount of drama and keeping the account fresh, without dominating Gimse's playing.
We are also treated to an equally fine performance of the delightful symphonic dances, which bound along with great vitality. The sound quality from Glasgow's Henry Wood Hall is certainly impressive, so there really are no compromises for the slender price tag - Bravo Naxos!

The 16th Concerto from Grieg is one of my favorite pieces of music so I was eager to listen to this cd.
The pianist performance is outstanding and each note is played with perfect precision and emotion.
What lets this cd down is the not so great quality of the recording. I can't stop thinking the sound sounds a little bit muffled and I don't feel like I'm standing in the concert room when I'm listening to it.
Too bad since the performance is so good.

My other nit is that I would have preferred a cd solely made of Grieg's concertos or piano solos. Instead, the cd is a concerto-symphony combination and I find myself often listening to tracks 2 to 5 only. This is a matter of personal taste of course but I suspect many people will buy this cd for the concerto itself and putting a symphony as track 1 was a bad choice in my mind.

You can't get it completely wrong by buying this cd, but if you are looking for a crystal-clear recording of Grieg's beautiful concerto, I would look elsewhere.
