First thing that springs to mind about this film is the fact that you have to be able to apreciate a good low budget action film, i know im speaking from the past 80's here but there are still some great action films being made that are not ruined by cgi effects. The tough and the deadly is one of these films that offers the viewer a entertaining, funny, and enjoyable hour and a half.
From the start you can tell that the acting is no robert deniro but it will do, and roddy piper fans will watch his films simply for the comic value, and to see him team up with billy blanks makes perfect sence. Unlike piper, blanks has no great appeal on his own, but when he is teamed up with another great B (or should i say C) rate actor they make a formidable duo.
There isnt much i can say about the film itself but as mentioned above it is a formidable mid 90's action film, where Elmo Freech(piper)is a private investigator and was contracted by John Portland(blanks)a CIA agent who suffers amnesia, in oder to reveale a dubious case of drug smuggling in which are involved big fishes of the CIA and from Washington. No originality in the plot but a good attempt to re-cindle the flame of the 80's cult action film, a low budget does not offer much in acting skills but these are made up for in the cheesey action scenes which will leave you laughing in your seat. Expect to watch this film a few times in order to apreciate the comic value of both actors.
On reflection this film offers the viewer a great 90 minutes of entertainment, but remember to stick to your selected genre of film, seeing this review is coming from a crazed 80's action film fan, you can expect to find it a disappointment if you don't hold an interest in action flicks.

Absolutely fuming! This DVD is a cut down version and I noticed it straight away after the first fight sequence. What was a good 1.30 minute fight scene at the beginning of the film was cut to less than 30 seconds. I simply do not understand it. Couldn't continue with the film 5 mins in after realising this. Very annoyed!! If I could vote 0 stars I would. The scene isn't even violent and its an 18 yet its still cut to pieces I hate it when this happens

Another quality 90's action movie that's really worth going back too, Billy Blanks and Roddy Piper both kick ass at their best in this high octane action thriller that's full to bursting point with cool long fight scenes from both actors, plenty of blood and violence and a good funny buddy relationship between both characters too, the story is good and well paced out with a good support cast too, the story deals with corrupt CIA members and drug dealing as usual in these types of movies, Great job from the director of Martial law starring Cynthia Rothrock another great action movie to check out. If your into old school action and martial arts movies make sure you check it out.
DVD has decent picture quality (GMVS Entertainment release, running on the cover)
No features. 1995, 85-minutes.
