5.0 out of 5 stars A real lifesaver!, 9 Aug 2007
By C. Goff (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Like many people, I was of the impression that breastfeeding would be easy, natural, and intuitive. Unfortunately, my wife and I discovered that it is anything but. "But how is it that our species survived for thousands of years without formula and bottles?" It is our loss of cultural knowledge and wisdom that has done us in in this case. It was once the job of the female members of a woman's family to pass on the knowledge. Lacking this, Clare Byam-Cook fills in the gap with this outstanding video.

Using rapid-fire factual information and clear case studies and demonstrations, Byam-Cook shows anxious mothers that 1) Breastfeeding SHOULD NOT HURT, and 2) the vast majority of problems can be solved by proper positioning and latching. The DVD gives you the tools to accomplish this. She has strong opinions about breastfeeding, and differs on several topics with La Leche, the NHS (for whom she worked as a midwife for 20 years), and other popular gurus. However, her methods work, and are both practical and realistic.

I highly recommend this book to anybody expecting a child, especially if they will be facing the poor information you can expect from the average NHS midwife in hospital.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent DVD, all questions answered, 25 April 2008

I totally disagree with the two bad reviews this DVD has been given. I found it to be extremely helpful and very reassuring. I think breastfeeding does not come easily for everyone and it shows you that simply positioning your baby correctly can completely change your breastfeeding experience from a painful and complicated one, to a joyful and worth while one. I also found the information about crying incredibly useful and overall, the DVD gave me lots of confidence with nursing my new baby.

4.0 out of 5 stars Natural doesn't mean easy - this shows there are solutions to any problems, 14 April 2009
This programme, although somewhat repetitive, hammers home that breastfeeding is possible for everyone - except the very few who just can't produce enough milk (we're not all made perfectly!) I came away believing that I WILL be able to breastfeed but that there may be issues BUT that these issues CAN be overcome. My only worry now is that I"ll get conflicting advice from the hospital midwives on how I should be breastfeeding and will be forced away from trying out her techniques. I really want to give her advice a go. I'm sure there are plenty of other breastfeeding methods out there but her's seem to be straightforward. And I'm glad she also covered such things as nipple shields and didn't go "all natural".

And for all those who talk about qualifications being essential, La Leche, NCT, etc, I've attended an NCT breastfeeding class and found it all so positive that I began worrying that they were hiding the truth (we've all heard of sore/cracked nipples, mastitis and engorgement so don't hide this behind the joys of breastfeeding).

I do wish there was a DVD on feeding twins - positioning etc. That was the only thing I needed from this film.

So, I'm looking forward to breastfeeding and will work hard at it. Just because breastfeeding is natural doesn't mean it's going to be easy for everyone so in fact I found this a positive thing that it may not go perfectly from the beginning. Where there's a will there's a way.
