The performances on this recording are fantastic; another elusive facet of Alkan's impressive compositional output has been granted to us through the advocacy and scintillating brilliance of Kevin Bowyer. All the pieces on this recording are first recordings as far as I am aware and oh how long did I wait to hear Alkan's organ/pedalier music before this and the Toccata label releases! The composer's music is ideally suited to the organ, though I understand that some transposition and imaginative registration is required to really bring this music off, which Bowyer clearly does. The Impromptu is perhaps the most virtuosic of these pieces and calls for considerable dexterity (and poderity!). Bowyer's championing of Alkan is one of the most heart-warming projects to have come out of the last 25-30 years of Alkan revival. Long may Bowyer's artistry continue and long live Alkan's organ music.

As an aside, I am very eager to hear the fruits of Bowyer's mammoth Sorabji project, which is due to be appearing over the next five-or-so years!
