Borrowed Heaven comes a few years after the Greatest Hits collection and the Corr's last proper studio album, In Blue. It's easy to see it was time well spent as of the 12 new songs here there is very little filler and plenty of catchy, rousing choruses. Lead single and opener "Summer Sunshine" is jolly, guitar-driven, 80s pop-rock and, like much of the album, has a few quirky production gimmicks to fill out the verse while the chorus explodes into big drums and meaty guitar hooks.

It's difficult to pick standouts as the style is quite firmly set and the quality between songs unwavering, but the finale "Silver Strand" is a grandiose Celtic instrumental led by Sharon Corr's sadly under-used violin with Andrea chipping in the occasional "La la la" vocal. "Long Night" is a well-crafted 80s power-ballad and in contrast, "Humdrum" takes a contemporary slant on the Corrs sound with scratching, synths and breaks creating the rockiest moment on the album. There may be disappointment that it veers towards the commercialism of Fleetwood Mac rather than the traditional folk of their earlier work, but this is the Corrs and has been for some time; so love it or loathe it, it's unmistakably their sound. --David Trueman

The Irish folk-pop quartet's fourth studio album (their first release since 2002's 'Live In The Dublin'). The album wasrecorded between Los Angeles and Dublin with producer Olle Romo (Elton John, Shania Twain, Backstreet Boys). The album sees them once again combine their Irish folk influences with modern pop music. The album contains the single 'Summer Sunshine' as well as the Bono written track 'Time Enough For Tears' (from the 'In America' soundtrack) and contributions from Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

I suppose they only commented with reference to the samples provided in the official site. They only listened to the 1st verse & chorus, without 2nd verse & chorus & break...I think this album is better than "In Blue", despite it is one of the shortest albums in The Corrs' discography. Trademark celtic violin & tin whistle appear more frequently in "Borrowed Heaven", which has no exception in some "potential" singles like "Angel" & "Humdrum". This is different from the situation in "In Blue" where the singles are just pop/rock but not celtic, for example, Breathless, Irresistible & Radio. Besides, from the cover design, you can tell that they do not offer their faces and bodies this time. There is no big suprise like "What Can I Do", "Runaway" & "So Young", but if "In Blue" is "cool", "Borrowed Heaven" is "warm" as you can feel the passion of The Corrs their uplifting & encouraging tracks. Even though they have obviously evolved, exploring new styles and deeper lyrics (e.g. "Humdrum", "Borrowed Heaven"), they show a bit of a return to their wonderful "Talk On Corners" (the 2nd album) style with beautiful tracks such as "Long Night" and "Silver Strand". Their old style blends with the innovations perfectly. This, in my opinion, is definitely the best Corrs studio album yet: "Forgiven, not Forgotten" was great, but a bit naive; "Talk on Corners" was also wonderful; "In Blue" was good, but a bit less Celtic than the others... "Borrowed Heaven" is almost as Celtic as "Talk On Corners", plus deeper, more meaningful lyrics. It explores lead singer Andrea Corr's voice more, without forgetting her tin whistle (plenty of its solos in this album!) or Sharon Corr's violin (especially beautiful in the instrumental "Silver Strand". The violin and Jim Corr's guitar and keyboards rule their 'Breathless'-y first single, "Summer Sunshine", whilst Caroline Corr's bodhrán and percussion have the spotlight in songs such as "Humdrum" (a great, "I Never Loved You Anyway"-ish track) and "Borrowed Heaven" (this track features great backing vocals by a South African band; the result is an original, very beautiful song). Bono's Golden Globe nominee "Time Enough For Tears" is also a very good track (Andrea's voice is really the big attraction here)... Well, there are several other great tracks, like "Confidence For Quiet" (peculiar title, but the song is beautiful), "Angel" and "Goodbye" (both written in honour to the Corrs' dead mother). But something is happening to the corrs, I reckon its a conspiracy by Jim Corr to get himself a higher profile, in this case at the expense of Sharon. Borrowed Heaven is a sure sig that the corrs are being sucked into the industry, the music submitting to the way of its pop peers. Borrowed Heaven is a nice record. Nice is a horrible word but the most suitable in this case. You can listen to this CD in your car during the summer and enjoy its sunny tones. There isnt technically anything wrong with it. However, the folk influence is disappearing and this is a completely different sound to that of 'Forgiven not Forgotten', which renders the corrs into any old Rock\Pop band of today.
