4.0 out of 5 stars Great single, average album, 16 Jan 2007
By Gareth Hall "Lord Rockingham" (Nyköping, Sweden) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
In 2004, this track got quite a few Prince fans excited about his comeback, thinking this would give him his first big hit since since 'Gold' and 'The Most Beautiful Girl In The World' reached the top 10 (in the UK) a decade earlier. Then came disappointment - it wasn't released as a single AT ALL, ANYWHERE except Australia! Then more disappointment - the album, also called 'Musicology', was full of mediocre material that didn't come close to matching the old school, pulsating funk of the title song. Yes, plenty of critics boldly proclaimed the album "Prince's best record in ages", but don't be fooled. They said exactly the same thing about his two previous albums, 'The Rainbow Children', and 'Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic'. It's not that Prince is no longer capable of writing great material, but his stubborn insistence on continuing to produce his albums single-handedly too often makes them sound conspicuously dated. For the 'Musicology' record, it's an unhappy coincidence that his songwriting was unusually slack as well. But this single? It's fantastic - there's a killer groove threading through the heart of the song that is guaranteed to get you dancing. As soon you spot this at a reasonable price, snap it up.
