Excellent sing-songs, 11 May 2004
Having got The Pretty Little Lightening Paw EP on their tour, i have had 2 months of enjoyment. The EP is great, More Action! Less Tears! Is extremely original, uplifting and a progression for the band. Without doubt though, Theres A River In The Valley Made Of Melting Snow is one of the best songs they have ever committed to tape, especially the lyrics. However, the songs they played from the EP were better live, the instrumentation being different and the songs longer. If you liked their last albums, GY!BE and all that jazz, this is a must purchase.

to fix it all with lovin' paw, 12 Jun 2004
This is a rather good little EP from Godspeed off-shoot Silver Mt Zion, previously only available on their tour. Somehow when I saw Silver Mt Zion live in London in Febuary 2004 I didn't spot this for sale, so I picked it up when it was finally released to the public. Unfortunately I was disappointed to find that the new song I heard them play live wasn't on there. On a side note, it was a great gig and I do recommend seeing them live if you get the chance. The frontman Efrim is a very funny guy, which makes you see the music as less mysterious and pretentious. What is on here is two tracks of around 10 minutes sandwiched inbetween two of about 5 minutes. The opener, 'More Action! Less Tears!' is a post-rock instrumental. It's fairly derivative perhaps but it's Silver Mt Zion so it's done well nonetheless. The rest of the tracks feature Efrim's vocals, which improve on each album while still retaining the rough, about-to-crack element. Both tracks are similarly long and meditative, hard to describe except to say that it's Silver Mt Zion. 'Microphones in the Trees' is my personal favourite, the title track is atmospheric and sometimes eerily discordant. The closing track is a fairly minimalist piece and a good closer to this EP. Silver Mount Zion's albums have previously improved each time. With this EP I would say that they haven't improved on 'This is Our Punk Rock' as such, but it is a worthy adition to a fan's collection. For newcomers I would recommend 'This is our Punk Rock' or 'Born into Trouble' first.

not the pick of the silver mountain catalogue, 13 Aug 2005
This is, like all the silver mt. zion catalogue, worth having. It is a slight departure from their other work. it is louder, more peculiar and not as beautiful as Horses In The Sky, and that may be why i don't like it as much. For those of you who are not big fans of Efrim's singing voice this is probably a good choice. They are not very prominant and often laden with effects which, for me, is a bit of a shame. This choice may have something do with the denser soundscapes they have adopted on this album, as it does blend in superbly with the other timbres. I couldn't possibly tell you not to buy this 'EP', but if you're looking for Mt. Zion in the same vein I would suggest buying Born Into Trouble as the Sparks Fly Upward, or even their first album He Has Left Us Alone But... If you're looking for the newer stuff Horses In The Sky is not only better then this, it's better than anything i've heard coming from the constellation press.
