Synopsis

A classic 1960s sex comedy, written by Woody Allen. Deciding that he is finally ready to settle down with his fiancee Carole (Romy Schneider), fashion editor Michael James (Peter O'Toole) realises that he has a real problem: He is so very handsome, and his job as editor for a Parisian fashion magazine gives women the constant opportunity to throw themselves at him. And Michael really likes it. So he employs the services of psychiatrist Dr Fassbender (Peter Sellers) to cure him of this inconvenient allure. Unfortunately, the shrink is even more woman-crazy than Michael, and as mad as a hatter to boot. They all end up at Chateau Chantelle and all hell breaks loose. What will Michael do when a half-naked parachutist drops into his convertible, a stripper does a bump 'n' grind in his lap, and the husband of a nymphomaniac wants to kill him

4.0 out of 5 stars A busy little film, 4 Oct 2005
By A Customer
Loud, garish and full of energy. Very much of its time and worth viewing for that alone.

Peter O'Toole plays an unlikely ladies man, given that he bears a strong resemblance to a ventriloquist's dummy (anyone who remembers 'Lord Charles' will get the picture) and does plenty of his trademark yelling. Romy Schneider is beautiful as his commitment-seeking regular girl. Sellers goes nicely over the top as sex-obsessed therapist, Doctor Fassbender, and Capucine is an elegant treat for the eyes, portraying a classy nymphomaniac.

Set in France - presumably to emphasise the stereo-type of France being the land of lovers - O'Toole finds himself pursued relentlessly by a bevy of beauties at every turn, while trying to be faithful to his girl.

Dreadful editing and continuity, but what this film lacks in polish it makes up for in vigour, capturing the breathless energy which was emerging in the sixties. Great music, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars How You Cats Will Laugh!, 7 Aug 2002
By A Customer
The quintessential comedy of the sixties. The first movie to be written by Woody Allen it stars Peter Sellers, Peter O'Toole and a bevy of beauties including Ursula Andress and Paula Prentiss. Stuffed full of wonderful quotes and a slew of physical comedy, the film showcases one of Seller's greatest comedic performances. The plot concerns a womaniser's - a handsome Peter O'Toole - attempts to straighten up before marrying the woman he loves; cue revelations on the psychiatrist's coach, encounters in strip clubs and Fellini pastiche dream sequences. Not forgetting a soundtrack by Bert Bacharach featuring Dionne Warwick and Tom Jones. The film suffers from some flaky direction and the plot meanders somewhat but this rarely detracts from the fun. The film is banned in Norway because of a scene where Peter Sellers tries to commit suicide by burning himself wrapped in a Norwegian flag.

5.0 out of 5 stars classic farce, 3 Oct 2006
By DH Dixon "whitespeck" (England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This Sellers film has everything: great music, one of Sellers' great characters (a sex-mad, unloved psychiatrist), a very funny romantic lead in O'Toole, and Woody Allen in great form. It also has genuinely funny ladies and a nostalgic 1960s Paris. There are great set-pieces. The reputation of the film is undermined by the go-cart race at the end, but otherwise it is very strong. The symbolism shows that there is a message in the film, which is that the sexual liberation trend of the 60s must lead to chaos for everyone, whether the romantic lead, the small man with specks, or the unrequited nutcase, with plenty of business for the psychiatrist. So like all Sellers' great characters he was able to take his part seriously even in this pure farce.

4.0 out of 5 stars All out zaniness but also all over the place
Mad as a strange cheese, this movie is scriptwriter Woody Allen's first screenplay, so that goes a long way to explain the complete unevenness and disorganistion of this movie. Read more
