DVD Description

Aldo Vanucci (Sellers), also known as 'The Fox', is one of the greatest criminals in the world and master of disguise.

Synopsis

Directed by Vittorio De Sica, AFTER THE FOX is collaboration between highly regarded American playwright Neil Simon and celebrated Italian screenwriter Cesare Zavattini on Simon's first screenplay. The film stars Peter Sellers as Aldo Vanucci, a blundering master thief. Vanucci contentedly whiles away his time in jail until he hears that his sister has become a prostitute. Vanucci escapes through a series of silly disguises, and finds his sister on the street picking up an older man. Vanucci attacks the man, only to find that his sister is in the midst of filming a dramatic "cinema verite" scene. Inspired, Vanucci disguises himself as a New Wave director named Federico Fabrizi, and begins pre-producing a "film" in which three million dollars in gold bullion will be smuggled into Italy. With the support of the criminal Okra (Akim Tamiroff), Vanucci hires ageing movie star Tony Powell (Victor Mature) for the lead role, and steals the necessary film equipment from a famous Italian director, played by De Sica himself. Victor Mature's performance is outstanding as he lampoons his own big screen persona from the 1940s, while the rest of the film scathingly satires art films, hoity-toity directors, and the Italian persona.

4.0 out of 5 stars After the fox..., 4 Aug 2005
A very amusing watch-once and forget about it film, I wouldn't say this was fantastic by any means but it's very entertaining all the same. Peter Sellers is a fugitive who poses as a film director in order to obtain a shipment of gold (while 'filming') by deceiving the welcoming village who are enthusiastic extras. Stereotyping Italians to no end (although Sellers has stereotyped every country in the world at some point and you know you love it!), he breezes through this film with his usual comic charm. Like the Party, it's completely pointless but will leave you laughing your head off.

1.0 out of 5 stars Abismal, Peter Sellers must have been mad to do this!, 16 May 2009
By Nic (UK) - See all my reviews
This film starts off with an absolutely awful theme, with the most ridiculous and desperate words.

Who is the fox? (I am the fox)
Who are you? (I am me)
Who is me? (me is a thief)
You'll bring your poor, poor mother grief, so

Chorus:

After the fox, after the fox
Off to the hunt with chains and locks
So, after the fox, after the fox
Someone is always chasing after the fox

and so on ...

Ultimately though the song turns out to be the best part of the film.

Avoid at all costs!

4.0 out of 5 stars A good Peter Sellers film, 19 April 2009
By Mr. Graham R. Dudley "graham1382" (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
It has all the mad-cap Peter Sellers entertainment that you'd expect. Of course, it's far-fetched, but that's what it's supposed to be!

Sellers puts on a good performance, as usual, as a supposed master criminal, who escapes from jail in an entertaining way. This, of course, gives him the opportunity to commit a real crime, but also save his family, at the same time!

If you like Peter Sellers, this is definitely a film for you. Don't expect it to be serious, but do look out for some good acting, some daft scenes and a completely mad script! I enjoy it each time I watch it.
