Product Description

CD Description

ABBA's second album, titled after their breakthrough single, which won the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest, shows how the Swedish foursome was already starting to outgrow the confines of the chirpy bubblegum with which they originally made their name. Super-catchy songs like "Waterloo" and "Honey Honey" abound, but composers Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson seem to be taking cues from greats like Lennon and McCartney and Brian Wilson, slipping febrile, inventive tunes like "What About Livingstone" and "Suzy Hang Around" in amongst silly but entertaining trifles like "Sitting in the Palmtree" and "King Kong Song".
Meanwhile, "Hasta Manana" shows the first glimpse of the fascination with Latin music that would lead to songs like "Fernando" and, much later, the Oro and Mas Oro compilations. Overall, WATERLOO shows that ABBA was well on their way to the brilliance of their later career as the decade's foremost purveyors of commercial pop.

4.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely excellent., 14 Sep 2005
Abba's second album but the one that introduced them to a much wider audience after winning the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest with the now famous Waterloo song. Lots of great melodies on this album, with the very beautiful Hasta Manana, the catchy Honey Honey, and my personal favourite, Dance (While The Music Still Goes On). If the latter doesn't hook you instantly and stays in your head for days on end until you literally drown it out with something else, I don't know what will. One of their greatest tracks! As with their debut, the boys still sing lead on several songs, but if you listen to these early albums enough times, it just sounds normal. All in all a great follow up to their first album, which in many places isn't recognisable as the Abba that everyone's used to, but better was to come with their third, which is probably the one that cemented Abba in the public consciousness as one of the great pop acts of the Seventies. The addition of the bonus tracks plus the DVD make this an essential purchase for all serious Abba fans. Buy and enjoy this album!!

This is it! Even if you're not the biggest Abba fan, this album is a must, if you can get your hands on it! This 30th anniversary editon includes not only the songs featured on the original album released in 1974, but also 5 additinal tracks including Ring Ring (US remix), Waterloo (Swedish version), Honey, Honey (Swedish version), Waterloo (German version) and Waterloo (French version) + a mini DVD including 4 amazing television performances including the legendary Eurovision Song Contest performance on April 6, 1974. For added value this performance includes the introduction by british commentator, David Vine who mixes up the male half of the band and renames Benny as "Born"! All in all this is very enjoyable. Go buy it!

Although I'm not a big fan of this & their other early albums (but I certainly AM a fan of their singles of this era), I have to admit this is a rather nicely repackaged set that... Read more
