You know those movies that you know you should theoretically hate -- they're cheesy, they're weird, and they're predictable.

But somehow... you just can't do it. "Mortal Kombat" is a cheesy, weird, predictable movie that is basically all about an Evil-For-The-Sake-Of-Being-Evil Villain, some wooden characters, and and an expanse of over-the-top action sequences. But somehow it's so unpretentiously video-gamish (well, DUH) that it's impossible to hate.

Brief backstory: Mortal Kombat (with a K!) is a once-a-generation tournament in which fighters battle for the sake of their respective worlds. If the evil sorcerer Shang Tsung (Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa) and his evil minions win this one, he gets the Earth.

And he's successfully manipulated three humans into going: Liu Kang (Robin Shou) who wants to avenge his brother, actor Johnny Cage (Linden Ashby) who wants to revive his career, and agent Sonya Blade (Bridgette Wilson) who wants to avenge her dead partner. They're guided by the mysterious thunder god Raiden (Christopher Lambert), who... doesn't fight. He's just kind of a Yoda.

But even before the three fighters arrive at the island where the tournament will take place, they're confronted by danger -- Shang Tsung has brought his deadliest three fighters to destroy all three of them, and they don't care much about rules. Can the gang overcome their personal issues and win Mortal Kombat? Can you guess? Do I even need to ask?

I openly admit it: I have never played "Mortal Kombat" video games, so I had no preconceptions about what this movie would be like.Read more ›

I watched the film a long time ago when it was first released and watched it again just recently, I enjoyed it much more this time round and didn't take it too seriously. I was hugely interested in the MK games when I first watched and hated the script not staying completely true to the game. This (to me anyways) is still frustrating with Shang Tsung saying "Flawless Victory" after fights even though it obviously wasn't and not saying "Fatality" at the right times! At one point as well Scorpion shouts "Get down here!" in a fight with Johnny Cage which I found a bit cringe worthy. It kinda proved the script writers weren't gamers.

It's good fun to watch especially if you are a game fan and the occasional wooden acting and cheesy lines just seem to make it more enjoyable. The script has some funny lines and Johnny Cage is cast as the main joker.

The film does stay fairly close to the MK franchise storyline and in my opinion is much better than MK Annihilation which seems to drop a story line altogether and looks like it was made for less than £100 (Not keeping the same actors didn't help either). This is worth a watch though.

Not many game adaptations into films usualy capture the spirit of the game but this one does! Ok it may not be as bloody as the game but it does have some cool fight scenes and faithful interpretations of some of the cool characters like sub zero and scorpion. It maybe slightly low budget and have some cheesy acting moments but its not to be taken seriously, its pure fun and a classic film, if you love mortal kombat the game and are a bit of a retro fan then you should enjoy this more!! Looks good on bluray too.

If you are interested in a clever plot, don't bother!! But if you want to see an enjoyable, and self mocking romp then this a good movie. Paul Anderson, the director, is a definite talent, and his subsequent movies Event Horizon and Soldier have been under-rated. With a largely no-name cast, and a rather thin and contrived plot, Anderson wisely invokes a subtle self deprecating tone, and it seems like the cast are all having fun making this movie. The action scenes are very well directed, and this mixes well with the humour, to make an enjoyable, if slightly silly movie - Like the cheeky ending!!

Mortal Kombat. The movie. Released in 1995. Wanna read my review on it? OK, but there's something you need to know. Mortal Kombat is based on the video game series of the same name. If you think Sonya is that ugly bird who use to appear in Eastenders, and the term "Finish him" means a girl breaking up with a guy, then you've clearly got a lot of catching up to do. And now it's time for a synopsis.

An evil dude by the name of Shang Tsung and his minions from the realm of Outworld have set up a once-in-a-generation fighting tournament called Mortal Kombat. Outworld has beaten Earth in nine straight tournaments, and if they win a tenth they get to take over Earth's realm, and thus us current inhabitants will be completely f*****.

The fate of the Earth lies in the hands of three individuals who have entered Mortal Kombat for different reasons. Johnny Cage (Linden Ashby) is a movie actor who wants to prove that he's not a fake and that he can fight for real; Sonya Blade (Bridgette Wilson) is a beautiful-but-tough soldier who wants to get her hands on another fighter, Kano, for killing her partner; and Liu Kang (Robin Shou), a martial artist who wants to avenge the death of his brother by killing Shang Tsung. Under the guidance of the god of lightening, Raiden (Christopher Lambert), the fighters must mentally prepare themselves for the fight of their lives.

The action in this movie is fast paced, and there are fights aplenty. Anyone who enjoys playing the MK video games (particularly those who STILL have a copy of the first game on the Mega Drive or SNES!) will be pleased to see all their favourite fighters in action, including Sub-Zero and Scorpion.
