5.0 out of 5 stars Safe debut single from GLC, 14 April 2004
This is the debut single from Newport clarts 'Goldie Lookin Chain'. In case you've been living in a cave for the last year the GLC are a group of 23 odd rappers kitted out in matalan tracksuits and shiny gold jewellery who rhyme about general Newport life in their own unique comic way. In the past six months they have already appeared in session on Radio 1, and supported Super Furry Animals, The Darkness and The Streets before they even signed a record contract. Half Man Half Machine is a brilliantly genius song about wanting to be a robot after doing their favourite pastime of 'smoking draw'. It is two and a half minutes of hilarious robot-style rapping and exaggerated newport accents which is unlike anything that has been heard before. Self Suicide is another few minutes of sheer brilliance about commiting suicide in order to become famous (which i am sure they will no longer have to do). If you have any sense of humour whatsoever i recommend you buy this single. You knows it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Funniest thing I heard in ages, 18 May 2004
Great stuff this. The first time I heard it on Radio 1 I couldn't help grinning and thought "I gotta get this", and it stands up to repeated listening, partly to understand some of the vocals, and partly because it is simply so good. And another thing, the rapping might be deliberately corny, but the production is excellent. Making use of a break from Timex Social Club - "Rumors", slowed down to a doomy tempo is the ideal accompaniment to this track, setting the timeframe just right. Anyone who was into Terminator, Robocop, Star Wars, and Spectrum, Commodore, BBC Micros etc in the 80s will just love the lyrics. The B Side Track is hilarious also, very tongue in cheek not to be taken seriously but you just see yourself sat in a scummy rented digs with this bunch of clowns when listening to these tracks.

5.0 out of 5 stars "i have interfaced with my spectrum! behold!", 5 May 2004
oh how fantastic is this single? i must admit i had never heard of GLC until recently....seeing them in a few magazines, randomly scattered about....and only heard this for the first time last night.
with lyrics like "got a speak n' spell plugged into my chest" "got stephen hawkings voice" and an amazing one concerning c-3po, which is probably unrepeatable here, this story of a half man half robot's quest to buy cigarettes cannot fail to make you laugh....unless you are devoid of a sense of humour.
it's unbelievably catchy as well (i've been singing "half man, half machine, what does it mean? what does it mean?" all day now)
and is much more than just some novelty record.
if you get a chance to see the video for this, please do, it is hilariously funny, the robot outfit is just genius and the terminator-style robot view is great (look out for the things written at the side). beware the comedy graffiti.
these lads will go far!!!!
