Synopsis

ALEX AND EMMA is the perfect date movie, courtesy of veteran comedy director Rob Reiner (THE PRINCESS BRIDE). Luke Wilson plays Alex, a struggling writer who owes $100,000 to Cuban loan sharks. If he could only finish his romance novel in thirty days he would earn a big enough advance to pay them off, but before he can even start, the thugs destroy his lap top. Enter Emma (Kate Hudson) the prim, highly opinionated stenographer Alex convinces to help him. The rest of the film then oscillates between their present-day budding romance and the 1920s setting of Alex's story, wherein a tutor named Adam (Wilson again) takes a job at a lush country manor and falls for his beautiful employer, Polina (Sophie Marceau). Hudson appears in the story as Anna, the au pair of Adam's student, and with Emma's input, her character eventually supplants Polina as the novel's primary romantic heroine. All in all, it's an amusing tale of how real-life romance can affect the outcome of romantic fiction, and is loosely based on the true story of Russian novelist Fyodor Dostoevsky, who fell in love with his own stenographer over the course of writing THE GAMBLER. In the Emma/Anna role, Hudson proves herself an adept comedienne, and she and Wilson share a natural, easygoing chemistry.

4.0 out of 5 stars An undervalued gem, 2 Jan 2007

I think the other reviewer doesn't do this film justice. Yeah its your typical boy meets girl but it puts a different spin on things and makes you laugh. Having the same actors for the book and real life means that there are some really effective comic scenes. It is also refreshing to have a hero with proper flaws and a heroine with a proper job. As characters they are surprisingly believable and the ending is well balanced and not too gooey. A romantic comedy in the truest sense of the moniker but definitely worth a watch!

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice Relaxing Film - but Cheap, 12 Sep 2007
By Sam "samueltyler" (Reading, Berkshire) - See all my reviews

Alex is an author with a gambling problem - he owes a lot of money to some dubious people. He has 30 days to pay up so he decides to get someone in to type up a book as he narrates it. His temp arrives in the form of bookish and forthright Emma who has an opinion on almost all he writes. The film then splits between showing the writing process and the characters in the book (played by Alex and Emma). Will Alex get his book finished in time? Will his feelings for Emma grow enough to withstand the introduction of a femme fatale?

'Alex and Emma' is a perfectly good romantic comedy that I happened across one night on TV. The budget suffers somewhat as a large part of the action takes place on one set and in the dubious looking past. However, the two leads in Hudson and Wilson make this a surprisingly funny experience. Hudson in particular proves to be an adept comedienne. I would not recommend this over better known rom coms, but as a way of passing a Sunday afternoon there are far worse experiences.

2.0 out of 5 stars What a boooooooooooooring movie!!!, 8 May 2006
By P. Pliatsikas-bartels "Jessy from the block" (Athens, Greece) - See all my reviews

How can you call this a movie? It's about a guy who writes books and a girl who writes them for him. And please what a lame idea! The whole story is about his book which is: guy likes girl. guy thinks girl is really nice. guy goes out with girl and realises he likes other girl. guy doesn't know which girl to choose and cheats on them. Hello? Where did all the nice movies go? 2 stars because this movie is with Kate Hudson, a really nice actress and not worth it to play in these kind of movies.
