Amazon.co.uk Review

Torque suggests that a lot has changed in the biker-movie genre since Hell's Angels on Wheels--this film may be the new benchmark of feverish chopper action. Martin Henderson plays Cary, a speed king and relatively civilised outlaw with a knack for annoying everyone, including drug smugglers, the FBI, an ex-girlfriend, and, worst of all, biker gang leader Trey (Ice Cube), who thinks Cary killed his brother. On the run from everyone, Cary survives by playing all sides against one another. But the story is less important than the frantic, over-the-top, tongue-in-cheek action surrounding it. The Fast and the Furious producer Neal H Moritz is responsible for this crazy, violent, yet appealingly sardonic cowboys-on-wheels piece. --Tom Keogh

Synopsis

The producer of THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS (2001) and XXX (2002) delivers another amped-up road-racing action spectacle in TORQUE. It's the saga of Ford (Martin Henderson) a motorcycle-riding outlaw who wants to clear his name of drug and murder charges. The cops are after him, as are rival cycle gangs caught up in a war over turf rights. Everyone in the film is tough, cool, and has lightning-fast reflexes. Ice Cube lends some heavier-than-a-Mack-truck screen presence as the leader of the Reapers, an African-American motorcycle gang who thinks Ford killed one of their members. Sexy Monet Mazur is great as Slade, the rough-and-tumble girl Ford left behind when he had to flee the country, and whose love he's now come back to reclaim. The thumping soundtrack includes offerings by Jane's Addiction, Nickelback, Kid Rock, and Hoobastank. There's nonstop trick camera work, fantastic stunts and action set pieces--like one motorcycle chase that takes place on top of, in front of, and inside a train. Slade even gets to have a motorcycle cat fight with the bad guy's girlfriend. Acclaimed music video director Joseph Kahn pours creative energy into every yard of this no-nonsense popcorn movie, his first feature film. It acknowledges its junky exploitation roots proudly, and at times seems to achieve some sort of twisted new level of pop art with its well-paced, colourful, giddy, gritty forward momentum.

2.0 out of 5 stars Tosh, 14 Oct 2006
By Brendan O. Clarke "brendoclarke" (Edinburgh) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
I reject the notion that a dumber film will be released in 2004. I just don't think it's possible that one year can hold two films this remarkably stupid. Yes, I know it's early, and yes, I know that the world is not safe so long as Freddie Prinze the second is still receiving scripts, but I doubt something will trump Torque in the department of sheer stupidity. Torque is Gigli on wheels, or if you prefer, Whigli.

Hoping to build off the incredible momentum of Biker Boyz...uh huh...Ice Cube pairs with Martin Henderson (The Ring) to race motorcycles in the hot California sun. How keen it would be if Dom DeLuise and Jamie Farr (and perhaps Roger Moore!) would join them on their quest. Believe it or not, adding some of the more shameful aspects of The Cannonball Run really wouldn't ruin Torque, so why the hell not? At least it would show more imagination than is there now.

Of note is Monet Mazur. She's cute, but that's not why she's noteworthy. In the film, she sports a t-shirt with the world famous Rolling Stones logo. Her dad is the original artist of said logo. Yeah, that's about all you'll learn watching Torque. Oh, and her middle name is Happy, and she's in a band called Nancy Raygun. Even still, that ephemera is of far greater value than the 80 minutes of Torque.

The scary thing is, rather than letting the bikes rev for most of the movie, there is actually a plot, as silly as it is, involving murder, betrayal, and, of course, a motorcycle race against time.

I won't even waste more of your time - or mine, which is really the issue here, belaboring the point. No matter how quick the super motorcycles in Torque are, they couldn't move the flick fast enough for me. What a dreadful way to spend an evening

1.0 out of 5 stars THE worst film I have ever seen!, 13 Oct 2005
By DP (nr London, UK) - See all my reviews
As a biker, I found this beyond cringeworthy.

Where do I start? Well, for starters, none of the so-called stunts in this film are possible. You cannot ride a street tyred superbike across rutted desert at 100 mph while talking on a mobile phone through a crash helmet. You can't do a rolling stoppie on a metal roofed train after "jumping" from ground level onto it. You can't hold a conversation with your riding buddy along side you through crash helmets at 100 mph, you can't....oh, what's the use?

You expect a certain amount of "dramatic license" in any Hollywood action film, but if they'd replaced the wheels on the bikes with anti-gravity miracle material and made them fly it wouldn't have been any less credible.

Acting is dire, the characters so shallow and derivative that you find yourself hoping they all get shot, and the plot could have been written by my dog.

Avoid this rubbish at all costs.

3.0 out of 5 stars enjoyable...nothing more!, 13 Jun 2004
Most people will take this film seriously and say its crap because it is unreel, flawed, has crap acting and stunts that simply are not possible. While this may be true, it doesn't mean that the film is not an enjoyable one. So if you are one of those serious people, then i would advise you not to watch this, but you if just want to watch something cool with a couple of mates on a satarday night, then this would be a great choice. Recommended if you like slick action or enjoyed the fast and the furious!
