4.0 out of 5 stars "It's on random...", 17 April 2004
Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg's hilarious 'Zom-Rom-Com' gets a soundtrack to come back from the dead for with this lively compilation. No stranger to music, Wright reveals once again his deft, Tarantino-esque ability to assemble a selection of songs that truly capture the spirit of his work. His soundtrack for 'Spaced' showed his diverse, hip and sometimes wonderfully tongue-in-cheek music taste, and Shaun of the Dead is no exception.

Interspersed with choice cuts of dialogue from the movie are memorable Electro tunes from Grandmaster Flash - 'White Lines' used to great comedy effect in the film - a terrific intro in I Monster's crazy 'The Blue Wrath', old favourite 'Panic' by the Smiths and The Specials' timeless 'Ghost Town' which are all slyly suitable in tone and lyric for the movie.

The really fun stuff comes in the form of a remix of 'The Gonk' from George Romero's original Dawn of the Dead, a creepy remix by Lemon Jelly of Peter Cetera's 'If You Leave Me Now', not to mention a secret bonus track featuring Keith Chegwin. Along with some eerie score selections, it all adds up to a truly enjoyable, carefully assembled and relevant soundtrack to the fun movie.

Wright also chose to 'out' himself as a 'closet Queen fan', and just try listening to Queen's 'Don't Stop Me Now' without picturing the perfectly-timed beating to death of a zombie. Listen to this one on your commute to work. It may open your eyes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Since the film isn't on DVD to sing the praises of..., 13 May 2004

So, I can't gush about the film for a few months, as it's still in the cinemas, but there is a release valve - the soundtrack also happens to be very, very good.

First and foremost, for all zombie fanboys, the tracks lifted from the original Dawn of the Dead ARE included here, which is a real bonus. May you never walk through a shopping mall again without humming THAT muzak.

Of course, a couple of clips from a 25 year old film don't suffice, so it helps the rest of the soundtrack keeps up the quality with a combination of classic tunes (be it White Lines or Ghost Town, and both Queen tracks are included as well) with the film's score and, best of all, a fine selection of soundbites from the film itself. And, on occasion, a combination of the three - a track using every utterance of the word "zombie" from the film being one. Also, channel surfing between the news and Morrissey's Panic stick out - although the whole bit isn't there, which would've been good.

However, there is one hidden gem at the end of the CD that is pure comic genius. You'll just need the film to get the joke, and that's all I'm saying, apart from Keith Chegwin was never this amusing.

One of those soundtracks that does justice to a film, and is worth listening to even if you aren't interested in the best British film since Withnail & I. If so, there's something wrong with you. I just plugged the film again, didn't I?

4.0 out of 5 stars Cheggers plays dead, 6 May 2004
I adored the film in all its wonderful silliness and this cd captures that perfectly. The mixture of some classic dialogue from the film with some seriously good music is perfect, although it's a shame my favourite line 'Arggh he's got an arm off' isn't in there. I've had the cd on repeat all day at work since I got it yesterday and work seems a much better place because of it.
There are some extras that a fan of the movie will love. The news broadcasts that we only see in snatches are played in their full glory here, with sage advice about dealing with the zombie menace. Of course the best extra is the bonus track featuring the inimitable Keith Chegwin. Appealing perhaps only to those who spent afternoons watching Cheggers Plays Pop. I wonder if they'll release a DVD of classic episodes of that show?
