Her most polished work to date!, 20 May 2004
Wilderness is Sophies fourth album (not counting a best of collection recently issued on Columbia), and is easily her most accomplished work to date. After a bit of a battle with Columbia she is now a freer spirit on her own Trumpet Swan label, and the positivity shines through on most of the tracks. Beautiful Girl opens the album, and is a sunny shimmering slice of pure pop and a good benchmark for the album. 'Open up your eyes' follows, with its majestic orchestral arrangements, before toning things down a little with 'Meet me on a rooftop' has minimal orchestration, with a live acoustic sound. 'Walking on thin ice' is another orchestral epic ballad. Elsewhere there is the sound of summer on 'Blue' and 'Surfer Girl' - the former having an almost carribean flavour. 'Angel of Darkness' is definately one of the best tracks - another epic ballad with a rich chorus and sweeping strings. Only the last two tracks let it down a little - the wailing jazz/club singer styled 'You make me high' and 'Feelin Good', which dont really do Sophies throaty vocals justice, reducing them to just a bit too raw a sound. Overall though, a fine piece of work that deserves to put Sophie back in the mainstream after a difficult time in music. You even get a bonus track slipped on the end which is a delicious ambient/dance mix of Soul Lover (another fine track)!
