Product Description

CD Description

ACHILLES HEEL is a great leap forward for Pedro the Lion (the group is really singer/songwriter David Bazan's project--he plays most of the instruments, with help here from guitarist Casey Foubert and multi-instrumentalists James McAlisterand TW Walsh). Distinguished from Pedro's earlier releases in its unified musical vision and superior songwriting, the album has an expansive, floating feel, but the whole is remarkably straightforward and intimate. With the exception of the slick, meandering rock groove of "Keep Swinging", the setis largely characterised by mid-tempo tunes featuring Bazan's vulnerable voice and literate, detail-packed lyrics.
Bazan's debts to Neil Young and grunge rock are evident here, but there are allusions to alt-country as well. (One can hear the influence of Will Oldham hovering over the proceedings.) There is also a dash of dark, emotive post-punk (as on the wiry, sad "I Do", and the sweeping "A Simple Plan"). Elsewhere, pop melodicism appears in the respective guises of country-rock and heavy-lidded pop-rock on "Foregone Conclusions" and "The Fleecing". Bazan's lyrics, which explore a worldof personal doubt, spiritual crisis, and troubled hearts, are both perceptive and profound, and--along with his gift for melody and earnest expression--make ACHILLES HEEL an especially notable release.

5.0 out of 5 stars potential fulfilled, 27 May 2004
This is the culmination of David Bazan's work since 1995. The album that maybe all Pedro The Lion fans wanted and, strangely, probably the most accessive since the first. It has a lighter tone than the recent albums but retains the guile in lyricsim and songwriting. It's rare that bands replicate the dynamic which made you love them in the first place, then spread their wings and it all still works. I've had a copy for three weeks now and have a new favorite album. As with all favorites there are a few initial stand-out tracks such as "Forgone Conclusions" and "Start Without Me", the latter being written by colaborator JT Walsh, whose influence on the album is a noticeable plus. But now the songs seep in and there isn't a weak one. The early mp3 teaser "Discretion" may be a tad misleading (maybe chosen by the emo record label, Jade Tree?) as it is a touch heavier than the almost 'Pet Sounds' flavoured album tracks. But this is a seemless work which works better as a whole, hard to single highlights. The subtle instrumentation is testament to attention to detail in the studio.

More upbeat, better songs, perfectly produced.

Cannot ******* wait for the European tour!

5.0 out of 5 stars Achilles Heel, 22 Jun 2004
Pedro the lion are one of the best rock acts of this age. Their amazing temproment and adjusting style are yet to break the commercial barrier (which is a great thing), but 'Achilles Heel' is the closest they have come so far. The album is as beautiful as any of the others however 'Control' is by far my favourite album and I was hoping this album would head in a simular direction. I was wrong. Even though David's song writing ability is as powerful and thought provoking as ever, the emotional impact of 'Control' is something that I dont think can be beaten. 'Achilles Heel' is a modern rock masterpiece that is as subtle as it is challenging, the vocals are smooth, soft and easily digestable which cuts nicely with the melancholic pop backdrop of guitar and gentle drum beats. This is a pleasant album but is not one I would recommend to a "newcommer" to the band. Pedro The Lion are truely remarkable, dont miss out!

5.0 out of 5 stars marvelous., 13 Feb 2006
Pedro the Lion, on Jade Tree records based in the US, started off as a project around seven years ago, with a man named David Bazan at the head of it. Since then five members has turned into two with Bazan taking control of all of the instrumentation other than the drums. Achilles Heel is Pedro the Lion's latest effort and shows a no less captivating side to this small town cum big city band.
This record will make you feel alive, it'll make you want to smile and appreciate the world around you in awhole new light... There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason for this, the lyrics are generally quite depressing and the general tone of the record is rather, well... glum. But something about it manages to lift spirits no end, Bazans weathered voice really hitting a spot.
Achilles Heel is not a record you'll immediately find yourself loving, but after a few days of having it on rotation it starts to grow and deserves to become one of the finest albums in your collection.
This album delves into the american dream and eventually tears it apart, lyrically dealing with issues of fatherhood, divorce and gambling addiction over a beautifully quiet back drop of luscious guitars and drums.
It is the perfect combination of hope and sadness. One of the best albums ever written? I think so. A culmination of great pop songs and touching lyrics make this a record you really need to own.
