Amazon.co.uk Review

There's not one cougar to be found in 24's dynamic third season, and that's good news for everyone. After Jack Bauer's daughter Kim (Elisha Cuthbert) survived hokey hazards in season 2, she's now a full-time staffer at CTU, the L.A.-based intelligence beehive that's abuzz once again--three years after the events of "Day Two"--when a vengeful terrorist threatens to release a lethal virus that could wipe out much of the country's population. Jack (Kiefer Sutherland) attempts to broker a deal for the virus involving drug kingpin Ramon Salazar (Joaquim de Almeida), whose operation Jack successfully infiltrated at high personal cost: to maintain his cover, he got hooked on heroin. That potentially deadly triangle--drug lords, addiction, and bioterrorism on a massive scale--sets the 24-hour clock ticking in a tight, action-packed plot involving a potential traitor in CTU's midst; the return of TV's greatest villainesses in Nina Meyers (Sarah Clarke) and former First Lady Sherry Palmer (Penny Johnson Jerald); a troubled romance between Kim and Jack's new partner Chase (James Badge Dale); and a scandalized reelection campaign by president David Palmer (Dennis Haysbert), who monitors CTU as they struggle to (literally) save the day.

The intricately woven subplots that are 24's greatest strength are masterfully developed here, and character arcs are equally strong, especially among CTU staffers Tony (Carlos Bernard) and his wife Michelle (Reiko Aylesworth); CTU director Ryan Chappelle (Paul Schulze), who is season 2's tragic bargaining chip; and the annoying but well-intentioned Chloe O'Brian (Mary Lynn Rajskub), who makes pivotal contributions with by-the-book efficiency. It's 24's superior casting that overcomes the series' occasional lapses in credibility, and season 3's twists make marathon viewing a nerve-wracking delight. By the time it's all over, with a high body count and the surgical reattachment of a main character's severed hand, 24 once again leaves you gratefully exhausted. As always, Sutherland anchors the series in the role he was born to play. When Jack takes a private moment to release 24 hours' worth of near-fatal tension and psychological anguish, Sutherland proves that 24's dramatic priorities are as important as its thriller momentum. DVD extras include behind-the-scenes featurettes (about the prison break sequence, climactic F-18 Hornet air-strike, and real-life bio-weaponry) that pay welcome tribute to the series' hard-working crew, who create Emmy-worthy television under pressures as intense as 24 itself. --Jeff Shannon

    5.0 out of 5 stars 24: Series III, 14 Aug 2005
Three years after the events in the previous series, our hero, Jack Bauer is having a difficult time, having become a heroin addict in order to maintain his cover with a Mexican drug cartel. We join the story as he puts away the leader of said cartel, and thats when Jack has another one of those days. Having thwarted an assassination attempt on a US senator, and prevented LA from being destroyed by a nuclear bomb, this time Jack has to deal with a deadly virus, a man he thought was dead, and a familiar face from the past...

Series 3 starts off at a relatively slow pace but then builds up to such an extent that you just have to keep watching as one thrilling cliffhanger comes along after another.

One word of warning, though. If you've seen Series 1 and 2, try not to look at the DVD menus when they come up, as they do give away one of the major surprises. You have been warned!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Most Addictive Programme To Hit Televsision ... Ever, 3 May 2004
24 is currently the most original piece of television I have ever seen. It has so much suspense and drama that it will leave you at the edge of your seat from the moment the clock starts ticking until the final episode! For those who have not seen this series, 24 is a programme that moves in real-time (i.e. one hour in the show equates to the hour you are watching it in, although it is actually 45 minutes as it has to allow for commercial breaks in the States)following the life of Jack Bauer, an agent trained in field operations and working for CTU (Counter Terrorist Unit)as well as the loyal and honest President David Palmer. At the end of each episode, you are left wanting to watch the next one and then the next one and then the next one and so on! In this third season of the series, it follows Jack Bauer as he tries to foil the release of a deadly virus into American society by terrorists, as Palmer tries to win re-election in office for a second term. From what I have seen of this series ( I am on episode 20 ), it has superseded season 2 and is definitely on a par with season 1. If you have never seen 24 before, you have to check it out as this is something you will definitely not regret experiencing. However, if you want the true 24 experience, watch 24 from season 1, as it will provide a richer experience of this amazing programme. Do not blame me though if you do not sleep for 24 hours after watching all 24 episodes in one go due to the sheer addiction and adrenaline pumping episodes that is 24. 24 has set a new standard and raised the bar in innovative television drama and it will be hard to beat!

5.0 out of 5 stars Still the best thing on t.v, 11 May 2004
By "depa4d" - See all my reviews
    (TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
Some critics have claimed that the clock has run down on '24' as it no longer has the originality of the first two seasons. This is true, many other programmes have borrowed the idea of split screen and such like but '24' is still in a class of it's own when it comes to unmissable t.v.

This is the third longest day in Jack's life and anyone thinking that Jack may have become accustomed to working in such conditions is proved wrong by the time the end credits roll on the first episode. This time round the plot is slow to get started but when it does it's firing on all cyclinders- gone are such wayward storylines involving cougars and kidnapping and back are action-packed plots that have you sitting on the edge of your seat. The '24' writers don't seem stuck for ideas just yet as Jack and Co face another terroist threat- this time it's biological in the shape of a virus that could kill millions in 24 hours. From then on the storyline progresses steadily and when you think you've got something sussed the rug is pulled out from beneath your feet. Matching the suspense ridden script is the brilliant acting from Kiefer Sutherland (Jack), Dennis Haysbert (Palmer), Reiko Aysleworth (Michelle), Elisha Cuthbert(Kim) and Carlos Bernard (Tony). Without such a fine ensemble of actors, the show would be nowhere near as good as it is.

With the show currently residing at Sky One a lot of UK viewers missed out on the show- my advice would be to buy the DVD as '24' has lost none of it's sparkle nor ingenuity, it could even be argued that it's the best series so far. Those who do have Sky should get the DVD anyway, just to view the series with the luxury of it being ad-free!
