This is a marvelous recording! The Vienna Horn, almost unplayable for its techical difficulties but rounder and more sensual in sound than the widely used double-horn, has very rarely been used for the purpose of chamber music. Here its unbeaten master, Wolfgang Tomboeck jun., first horn of Vienna Philharmonic, has chosen Beethoven's horn sonata, the horn trio by Brahms, "Adagio and Allegro" by Schumann and Schubert's Song "Auf dem Strom" ("On the River") for voice, piano and horn. The result is really georgeos: I don't think anyone ever has heard those works played with a tone of such beauty and desire. It's ideal romantic style what Tomboeck and his astonishing piano partner Madoka Inui achieve here. Even Genia Kuehmeier, Riccardo Muti's Pamina at Salzburg Festival 2005, does a wonderful job with her soprano full of beauty and sensuality. Recommended, even by music.web.uk!
