Mortal Kombat Deception has something special over all other beat-em-ups: quick, simple fun. Most fighting games at the moment have dozens of unique combos to learn for each character. Each combo requires precision in timing and execution. To master this can take weeks of practice. And then there are all the other characters to learn...Midway has recognised that not everyone wants to spend weeks learning different combos, so with Mortal Kombat Deception you get mostly simple combos and a few special moves. This makes the game much easier to pick up and play reasonably well. If like me you are trying to demonstrate the game to cynical friends, this raises its appeal, as it only takes a few fights before they start feeling that they have got the hang of the game. Of course, this means that you will get beaten by rookies! However, the addition of a 'Hara Kiri' move, which allows you to kill yourself before your opponent can, allows you to take the shine off of their victory, and helps to avoid total embarrassment! Should you tire of the normal fighting mode, the other modes will add a lot to the life of the game. They feature Chess, Tetris, and an adventure game; all clones of other games, but with a distinct Mortal Kombat theme to them. Each one therefore shares the sense of comedy and simple fun, which anyone can pick up and enjoy. Of course, there are flaws. The extra game modes become tedious quickly, especially when playing against the computer. The character animations are also poor, with characters switching poses without any joining frames. It creates sudden movements which can get annoying to watch. Finally, there are very few long, varied or tough combos to pull off in the fighting mode, which will frustrate those who like spending weeks learning different moves. If that is you, maybe rent Deception for a couple of nights for a few laughs. For everyone else, though, buy this. The different modes and simple, comic gameplay, will keep you playing for months!
