5.0 out of 5 stars captivating, 15 Sep 2008
A selection of Roger Smalley's chamber works that he has written over the past 20 or so years makes captivating listening. There are many things to delight in here, but I particularly want to recommend the later works which are also the more 'romantically' influenced ones. A number of the works take romantic music (most Chopin and Brahms, but there are other influences here) as a starting point. This is usually in the form of a single phrase that Smalley has particularly liked and decided to extrapolate on. As such, the romantic phrase (perhaps a sentence from a Brahms intermezzo or a Chopin mazurka) is just a starting point and except for the Variations of a Theme of Chopin for piano solo, is not discernible in the work. What IS discernible is the pregnant emotional quality of that phrase in the music. Smalley indulges in Romantic harmonies and textures while always maintaining a very contemporary, even modern, sound. As a result the later chamber works are decadent and utterly beautiful. The trio for clarinet, piano and viola is my particular favourite; just ten minutes long but the way that the music rises up, flowers and then disolves suddenly is exciting and absolutely beautiful. The piano quartet is another such work. It is slightly longer and the way that Smalley combines the different possible combinations of instruments produces many diverse sounds with some moments of rapt beauty. The concentration on the treble register gives the music an ethereal, magical quality.

The popular Chopin Variations are played nicely, as are the original Romantic inspiration pieces; one of the best mazurkas (in my opinion!) and a rather mysterious Brahms Intermezzo. It would have been nice if Smalley had recorded these works himself so that we listeners could hear what HE hears and how this influenced the music. One senses that he has a great grasp of this repetoire.

The earlier works are a little more difficult to listen to; 'Poles Apart' and the other trio, but they are still nice in their own way. However it is certainly in the later pieces, where it seems that Smalley has found and refined his own musical voice, that the true pleasure lies. And it is his own voice, and a highly original, beautiful one too.
