What do you get if you mix a love of 80s synthpop, techno, J pop, Nintendo, and icy foodstuffs? An excellent pop album, if this CD is anything to go by.Having bought some quality electronic pop albums over the last couple of years (The Faint, Ladytron, and Miss Kittin to name just three), I was looking for something a little different to what I had heard. Having checked out the Freezepop web site for track samples, I decided to buy the album. First of all, the quality never drops below good throughout (hence the five stars), and is more often much better than that. Also where other albums can lag on weaker tracks, each song has plenty of ideas spinning around to keep you interested. From the synthesized voice on 'I am not your Gameboy', the French lyrics on 'Parlez-vous Freezepop?', through to the big synthesizer build on 'Manipulate' (which oddly reminds me of 'Witch Hunt' by Rush, in atmosphere at least). Although the tone of the songs tends to be quite upbeat and playful, there is real substance there as well. On one hand you have singer Liz Enthusiasm singing 'I am a bike thief' (I don't think carjacking exists in Freezepop's neon coloured world). On the other there are beautiful songs such as 'Duct tape my heart' and 'Tonight'. I don't want to tempt fate, but I have a suspicion that this album may slip down the cracks (in the UK at least). Freezepop don't fit in with any of the current trends. I hope I'm wrong - this CD is full of songs that stick in your head, and put a smile on your face. Get over to the Freezepop site and take a listen to the samples. Then come back here, and buy the CD :-).
