Amazon.co.uk Review
RoboCop 2 isn't just the title of the first sequel to RoboCop but refers, in a plot prefiguring Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), to a second, more powerful cyborg introduced as an adversary to the tin-can man played to perfection by Peter Weller. Generally dismissed by most fans, here director Irvin Kershner does much the same job as he did with the first Star Wars sequel, The Empire Strikes Back (1980), which is to make a darker and in some ways more involving follow-up.

Nancy Allen returns from the original as RoboCop's policewoman sidekick and Kershner sticks to the jet-black satire and ruthless comic-book morality of the original, making this a rarity for Hollywood: a multi-million-dollar franchise movie anti-capitalist assault on the "greed is good" mentality of the Regan era. There's even a hilariously prescient dig at the way the studio would eventually dumb the series down into family-friendly fodder, a process that began with the immediate sequel, RoboCop 3 (1993). Action is to the fore and among the spectacular set-pieces and furious carnage RoboCop 2 offers a last stand before digital effects took over for some excellent stop-motion animation for RoboCop's psychotic new foe.

On the DVD: this is a perfunctory release with nothing in the way of extras bar the original trailer presented cropped to 4:3. Fortunately the 1.77:1 picture on the main feature is excellent, with minimal grain, strong colours and plenty of detail. The sound, though four-channel Dolby Prologic rather than Dolby Digital, is likewise excellent, with every word clear and gunshots, explosions and pulsating score combining to full cacophonic blockbuster effect. The disc also contains dubbed versions in Italian, French and Spanish, as well as a vast selection of subtitles. --Gary S Dalkin

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the original, 21 April 2007
By Jay "The Amazon Reviewer" (Mauritius) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
RoboCop 2" , the sequel to 1987's ultra-violent "RoboCop", is not quite up to par with its predecessor. The film still manages to entertain on a large level. I know that a lot of people do not like this movie, but I personally think it is still pretty good. I'm not writing a review of this movie, I am just expressing my thoughts on it.

First off, this movie is a lot more violent than the first "RoboCop". You get scenes of bloody shootings, grisly scenes of torture, and a surgery which I'd rather let you see for yourself than describe here. Paul Verhoeven does not return to shock his audience with graphic violence and ultra dark humor, which has since become trademark in his films. The director this time is Irvin Kershner, who made "The Empire Strikes Back" nearly ten years before this movie. Kershner seems to focus a lot more on action, rather than story.

Second, the movie's villain, Cain (Tom Noonan), to me is a direct opposite of Clarence Boddicker (the villain from the first film who was played by Kurtwood Smith). Cain enjoys giving people pleasure (through his highly addictive designer drug called Nuke) while Boddicker was a sadist who took pleasure in the death and suffering of others. (Though after Cain's "transformation", none of this really matters).

Lastly, this movie does not exploit children. The kid in this movie, Hob (played by Gabriel Damon) is Cain's twelve year-old side kick. He is a violent, foul-mouthed little child who runs errands for Cain. The writers for this movie did this intentionally, to show that crime holds no age barrier. Regardless of age, crime is crime.

Like I said, "RoboCop 2" is not trying to be better than its predecessor, it's just trying to be something different.

5.0 out of 5 stars As Good As the First!, 16 Mar 2003
This review is from: Robocop 2 [VHS] [1990] (VHS Tape)
This is one of my favorite movies. I used to rent it constantly before I finally got my own. Heck, I must have rented this film so much, I almost made the retailer a millionaire.

This film is alot more violent than the first one. The subject of this film is RoboCop trying to rid the city of a drug called Nuke; my favorite part of the film is when OCP reprograms Robo into being more calm and cool and make speeches. It's funny when

he tries to talk some kids down from robbing an electronics store and playing with a broken hydrant, they curse him and he says, "Bad language makes for bad feelings". The title character is also interesting, but deadly!

He makes ED-209 look like a pussycat! It seems The Old Man has turned into a bad guy in this movie. He was a good guy in RoboCop 1, but now he's a bad guy with a real biotch of an assistant, Faxx. They both should've gotten their commupance in the end, but nope, but it's like RoboCop said, "We're only human". So in conclusion, I recommend this film! It's as good as the first!!

By the way, the boy who plays Hob, the junior gang accomplice of Cain also did the voice of Littlefoot in the first Land Before Time!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great action-packed sequal., 24 Oct 2008
Robocop is once again called into action as he battles an organisation who are producing Nuke, an addictive drug. He is also fighting a rear-guard action against his creators, OCP, who are wanting to replace him.

Though this film may not have the satire or black humour of the original, it is still a great film. The Old Man is shown as a callous, unfeeling tycoon with no regard for human life (a side of him which was only hinted at in the original), and Cain, the new villain, is the picture of calm-but-menacing intent. The film certainly has some dark themes - elected government figures controlled by ruthless corporations and the hand-in-hand relationship drugs and crime have. More action-based than the original, and the ending is kind of unresolved, but it's still well worth seeing.
