Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Latest digital technology - for each and every application

The Optio S30 is the ideal all-round digital camera for anyone for whom versatility, seductive design, perfect ergonomics and simple operation are of equal importance. The Optio S30 with 3.2 megapixels offers the perfect resolution for stingingly sharp prints up to 13 x 18cm. The Optio S30 lies extremely well in the hand and is captivating with its slim, responsive aluminium housing. It utilises a highly efficient 3x zoom lens with 2 double-sided aspherical lens elements and features PENTAX's exclusive super-multi-coating. Brilliant photographic results with superb colour accuracy are without question - even in this tiny wonder. And it is all made possible through the unique design of PENTAX's space saving "Sliding Lens System".

A too-small camera body can be an annoyance if miniaturisation impairs operability. Not so with the Optio S30. Particularly remarkable on this ultra-compact model is a very generously dimensioned shutter release button and Mode Dial located on the top where the 9 different photographic mode options can be selected. It couldn't be any clearer. The concept continues in the menu guide. All features can be found and accessed quickly and simply. Among them are 8 Picture Mode programs including the new Text Mode for photographing documents and the Marine Mode, which provides for outstanding underwater photographs when the camera is used with the optionally available underwater housing. Large TFT LCD Display for an absolute view whether before, during or after recording: the sharp TFT LCD Display provides for a total view. After recording you get an immediate display for a fast evaluation. And if you need to see more detail then you can magnify the image up to 16 times. Or you can view 9 images at a time to quickly evaluate your combined work. You can even do a bit of work right on the screen and save the changes. Details that leave nothing to desire from the various functions that the camera makes automatically to the individual user's selection of sharpness, saturation, and contrast: the most diverse options are open. The 5-Point Autofocus is switchable to Spot Focus providing for best-possible focus accuracy in difficult situations. Ten digital filters, a macro mode for detailed photographs as near as 6cm away, the individualising of different functions as set by the user, the optionally available remote control as well as a protection function that guards against the inadvertent deletion of specified images round out the features - leaving you nothing more to desire in a digital camera.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice little camera but a bit slow, 23 Nov 2004
By Mary Tully "mousey330" (UK) - See all my reviews
    (REAL NAME)
I bought the Pentax Optio S30 because I wanted a compact camera that would fit in my pocket and would be easy to carry around, and it certainly fulfils that requirement- its very slim-lined and portable. Other features I particularly like about this camera are the fact that it takes ordinary AA batteries rather than the Li-ion ones, so it's much cheaper to power, and if you are ever stuck in a situation on the move, where your rechargable batteries have run out but there's an important photo opportunity coming up, you can just nip to the nearest shop and get some regular ones. It also has some very nifty, although not strictly necessary, 'fun' modes, such as black and white filter, panorama assist, super macro and many others. However, I have found that it is very slow at actually taking photos- there's a big time delay between pressing the button and actually taking the photo- almost 2 seconds I'd say, which is a big annoyance, especially if you're trying to take a photo of something that's moving. I have found a way around this though- if you set it to manual focus it takes the photo almost instantly, but of course with that there's the added problem of having to fiddle around with the focus before taking the photo and having a greater chance that it'll be blurred. So, my conclusion is, this is a great camera if you want something that's easy to use and easy to carry around, and if you'll be mainly photographing landscapes, people, flowers- things that don't move much. But if you're thinking of taking a lot of action shots, go for something else.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality at its best, 30 Nov 2004
By JOHN E CARROLL (Wigan United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
For £99 I now have a really good camera that is packed with useful features. Take time out to read the instructions and you will get the best out of it. I cant believe I have a 3.2 megapixal camera with a 3 x zoom lens for such a good price. It is smaller than a pack of 20 cigs but feels substantial in the hand. A nice big shutter release button makes it easy to use. I used the video setting last night and the quality was good enough and it has sound! It does have built in memory but I also bought a ByteStor (secure Digital) 256MB card for about £16 and a couple of sets of good rechargable batteries.
To sum up, exceptional value, quality finish, easy to use and slips easily into the pocket.

    5.0 out of 5 stars S30 - Great Digital Camera, 29 Dec 2004
By A. Sayer "A13" (UK) - See all my reviews

Well, where do I start. This camera is great for someone who just takes holiday photos or just day to day pictures out and about. I bought this after my other Pentax was stolen. 3 Years ago it cost me £400 to buy a Pentax camera, now only £99! Plus amazon also gave me a free camera case, which was very nice of them! This camera fully deserves the 5 stars that i have given it. With its movie mode, with sound it excels other cameras in its class! A Great Buy for Anyone!!!
