5.0 out of 5 stars Proper R&B and then some, 21 May 2004
By C. Wheeler - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
What an excellent album. I bought this on the strength of having heard "Tax Man" on the radio, which is the best version I have ever heard. This album can truely be described as R&B unlike what is generally considered as R&B in modern music, but it touches on swing and soul also. I had expected the album to be more blues based R&B given the origins of the Rolling Stones, but this is a CD recorded by someone who is obviously enjoying his music and has produced a truely great recording. This is the first CD I have bought for a long time that I loved every track.

Absolutely brilliant. An outstanding version of Taxman by Beverley Skeete who displays her superb vocal range on this cd.

3.0 out of 5 stars mostly background blues, unfortunately, 8 Aug 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Just for a Thrill (Audio CD)
I have bought all the Rhythm Kings' cd's and usually enjoyed them tremendously. This one unfortunately only picks up from track # 11, the Beatles' Tax Man. As far as I'm concerned, the 10 tracks before that are easy on the ears but also rather forgettable 1920's style blues songs. It doesn't help that this album is also almost totally devoid of instrumental solos. Which is a shame considering the fact that a number of great instrumentalists like Albert Lee are members of this band.
In consequence, 3 stars for an easy listening background music album. For real fire and great songs, I very much prefer the Kings'latest DVD, Let the Good Times Roll.
