Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Spartan is the third in a series of turn-based empire-building strategy games that includes the best-selling Legion and Chariots of War. Spartan focuses on one of the most influential civilisations in the history of mankind--the ancient Greeks, and allows players to choose from 100 nations to lead to victory, including Sparta, renowned for its total dedication to the art of war and that produced the ultimate fighting machine of the ancient world--the Spartan Hoplite; probably most famous for the courageous last stand of 300 Spartans at the Battle of Thermopylae in 480BC

3.0 out of 5 stars Rewarding if you have the time, 13 Nov 2005
By Prof TBun (Birmingham UK) - See all my reviews
Whilst the game mechanics have change little since Chariots of War, it is a far far better game. The interface is attractive and ancient Greece is the best possible setting. The battles are still simplistic but do reward skill and planning. I was disappointed there were no navy visuals.

Resource managent is crucial to advancement. Overall strategic planning is what the game is all about.

The tutorial is excellent. If you like the game its very replayable IF you have the time.

On the down side the diplomacy is very difficult to get a feel of. There is plently of room for improvement with the battles.

Turn-based fanatics you may love it.
Real-time Gamers stay clear.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good game, 26 Mar 2004
Spartan is a turnbased and realtime strategy game, its turn base in the campaign screen were you manage your fledgling empire and real time for the battles.
Spartan is a massive improvment on previous titles from Slitherine, diplomacy is more indepth, combat works better, updated graphics and even a new Optional 3d graphics engine for battles, includes multiplayer via LAN and gamespy, a huge single player, good sounds/music in general and a brilliant setting to boot! revolving around ancient Greeks in the days of city states, wars and Persian expansion.
I recommend this game to people who want to play an indepth strategy game and arnt bothered in it having all the latest and greatest high end pc spec graphics.

1.0 out of 5 stars Spartan by Name Spartan by Nature, 6 May 2004
Ok - the engine used here is the same basic model as Legion and Chariots of War. Each time the latest evolution as come out i have read with interest the 'enhancements' that have been made to improve playability etc.
To be honest the engine has not developed much at all - The hype of 3D battles and elaborate Diplomacy are just that - in fact the real-time battle element is simply the same tired engine rendered in 3D it does not actually allow any real-time interaction - you pre-order units and off they go - yes in 3D but its so unsatisfying as to be pointless.
Accelerate game play by just auto -resolving (more men and high strike rate of your troops will tell you if you'll win).
Diplomacy gives you more 2 way but its flat and you seem to fail in all your attempts above the % for success rate would suggest.
Graphics in the strategic map have improved but it can't cover up the flaws in a tired engine well past its sell by date.
If you like 2 dimensional gameplay in a repetitious and historically poor setting roll on up.
As with Chariots of War if you like Total War series save your money for Rome out in September?
