This 12CD set includes all Caruso's extant recordings. There are various editions available and this RCA version has been well remastered and issued in cardboard sleeves in a compact box. The notes are of reasonable quality but detailed discographical details have not been included. This is not a major loss as the session details are readily obtainable elsewhere. The recordings are presented in chronological order and all were recorded via an accoustic horn. This means the various orchestras and pianists sound very thin but, surprisingly, Caruso's voice has been caught to perfection. In later years, various attempts were made to supply some of these discs with replacement electrical and, indeed, digital accompaniment but to my mind none of these has been a success and should be avoided. The originals are so much better!

The quality of the voice is absolutely amazing. To my mind, no other tenor who has recorded has one to equal it - in range, tone, or interprative skill. The recording quality is very acceptable and we must be eternally grateful that both the Gramphone and Victor companies preserved so much for the delight of future generations.

The repetoire is typical of tenors of the time and includes popular arias, songs and a few curious oddments (The Lost Chord, and Over There for example) but, in general, reflects what was popular in the early years of the last century. Not that this is in any was a period piece; Caruso's voice is of timeless quality and remains both as a benchmark against which all other tenors must be judged and a source of joy to all who listen to it today.

An essential purchase for all who love great singing.
