5.0 out of 5 stars Irresistable, 31 Jan 2009
Symphinies 1-6:
Bernard Davis' review above rather misses the point about these works, perhaps misled by the set's notes (that he rightly condemns)? Yes, they are the work of a young man. But Schubert's voice is distinctive and his skill in writing symphonies is impressive. More to the point they are each gems of the repertoire - if only there were more works like them! - and exemplify a classical perfection that is yet of it's own time (they are not at all simple pastiche of Mozart and Haydn). To portray the 3rd and 4th, for example, as weak works is just quite simply bizarre! Anyway, I don't have the words to talk of them but they are works that I have long loved and long searched for the perfect recordings of. With these Colin Davis accounts I have found them. The performances are irresistable and so is the price!

These accounts by Colin Davis are as near to perfect as I have heard. They are wonderfully played and the sheer joy of the works is for once fully in evidence. Bohm's set, for all it's merits, lacks some of this joyfulness as does Harnoncourt's stimulating but rather dour account of these works. I find Abbado's accounts rather unattractive and unconvincing in parts. In Davis' hands the works are truly irresistable - his skill in shaping the flexible structures that Schubert uses and in making the music truly smile - that interplay between the woodwinds! - is unparalleled.

8 and 9: These are mature works and receive strong and interesting performances. I'm not sure you would buy the set for these, though, as there are some very very special performances out there. Krips brings a special magic to this music, for example, and Bohm's 9th is also very special. And then there is Solti and ... . Colin Davis here won't disappoint and even if you have other accounts of the mature works you will sometimes listen to his accounts with pleasure. But the true reason to buy this set is the early symphonies: they are something special and unique in the repertoire and they receive wonderful performances here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb survey of Schubert symphonies, 2 Aug 2009
By James F. Pringle (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have never heard Schubert's beautiful music sounding better. Colin Davis and the Dresden players find the poetry and the detail in these symphonies. They are superbly performed and well recorded. I am not a big fan of CDs being presented in little envelopes in a cardboard box, but that must contribute to the low price of this splendid collection. A real bargain.

4.0 out of 5 stars Impressive performances at a bargain price., 22 Nov 2008
By Bernard Davis "Bernard Davis" (Birmingham, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
Do not think that the bargain price means cut price standards. This may draw for the cheapest set of Schubert's Symphonies on amazon, but the performances are top quality.

Schubert's symphonies cannot be judged like those of Beethoven or Brahms. The first six are a young man's musical youth. They were composed when he was between 16 and 21. They cannot be expected to match the achievements of greater experience.

To my ears 1,3 and 4 are the works of an excellent student, but as early as symphony No 2 we hear the early work of a master. Already in this symphony we can hear the unique musical voice of Schubert. There is the same power as in late Mozart or mature Beethoven, but with a lightness that is all his own. There is also his unique way with melodies, which may have the simplest basis, but which he makes sing as no other composer can.

This is the kind of symphony cycle in which the greater the quality of the music, the higher the achievements of the conductor and orchestra rise. So it is that the second symphony is given an excellent performance. The Staatskapelle Dresden deploy their unique sound to great effect. The strings buzz like a swarm of good tempered bees, while the wind instruments sing a merry birdsong.

The beautiful melodies of the first movement of the Fifth Symphony are expertly handled. The Sixth Symphony is given a forceful performance. The majesty and sense of inevitable unfolding of the two movements of the 8th `Unfinished Symphony' is well articulated.

This version of the 9th Symphony is as good as any that can be found. Colin Davis' interpretation revels in the generous scale of the music, and lovingly articulates every detail.

Nothing can be done to disguise the lesser degree of inspiration in symphonies 1,3 and 4. The performances are still good, but conductor and orchestra have less to work with, and it shows. Still, it is valuable to have all eight symphonies it this box set, and hear how Schubert progresses towards his later masterpieces.

The one real disappointment is the booklet. The standard of the writing is poor, and contradictory. Stefan Schickhaus tells us that the early works "were complete masterpieces in themselves", and then describes No 4 as "the most superficial and garishly popular". There is a short biography of Colin Davis, but none for the Staatskapelle Dresden Orchestra. These performances show that they deserve one.

All in all a very good set, if not quite perfect. The packaging may be cut price, but the music is the full shilling.
