2.0 out of 5 stars lovely singers in main parts, poor conducting, 19 Jul 2004
By Mr JB (Karlskrona, Sweden) - See all my reviews
The Pearl Fishers is one of the sweetest operas in the repertoire - concerning the music. The orchestration and natural floating melodies are simply gorgeous. The story, on the other hand, is really rather silly and poor. So a performance of this opera is very much depending on that the conductor and singers manage to make you forget the story and concentrate on the music. About this specific recording must be said that it contains the original score - what you hear most these days is a revision by Bizet himself, made some years after the premiere.

And concerning the singers, this recording definately has what it takes, and more... Vanzo's naturally high tenor was one of the last centuries most beautiful french voices, and is here easily produced and with a wonderful tone. The same ought to be said about his more well known companion ms Cotrubas. About the minor parts, Sarabia is not an ideal Zurga, but Roger Soyer is rather good in the role of Nourabad. What ruins this recording is the conducting from George Pretre. His tempi are among the worst chosen I've yet heard in a opera performance. The whole performance is about 20-25 minutes (!) faster than any rival's set, and yet this is a complete performance of a score that when conducted with some knowledge isn't very long anyway. Musical terms like andante, largo, adagio must be totally unknown to this conductor. I think that Pretre is making the cardinal fault of speeding up to make the music/drama more dramatic, instead of instructing his orchestra how to play more intensely & soulfully. The problem is that this opera doesn't get more dramatic from fast (sometimes furious) pacing, as a matter of fact, you thereby lose this opera's only chance of a justifiable (good) performance, as I stated in the beginning of this review.

Many other conductors have faired far better, however. The best ever recording in my opinion is a live recording from 1959, also with Vanzo as Nadir, with Maestro Rosenthal conducting, and the other parts taken by such fine singers as Janine Micheau and Gabriel Bacquier. Here the tempis are natural, floating, and rhythms clearly marked, and the singing is among the very finest examples of french opera singing available, with both Nadir's romance and the great duet as examples. It is available on the Gala label at budget price (check it out here at amazon.co.uk). Then there are two mono versions from the fifties (from Phillips and EMI labels) as well that contains nice singing (Henri Legay and Leopold Simoneau being the Nadirs) and good conducting. I really see no reason at all (not even the fact that it contains some music not usually heard in today's performances) for you to buy this record, if you're not a close relative to George Pretre or something like that. If this set didn't have such exceptionally fine singers in the leads, it could probably be nominated for "the worst opera recording ever" if such a price was to be won.
