Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

your favourite player on the pitch. This digital camera not only gives you the optical power to explore new territory and subjects. With its four million pixels, innovative TruePic Turbo processing system and array of shooting features, you can be sure your images have the clarity and colour to really come alive.

The CAMEDIA C-765 Ultra Zoom is the world's smallest 10X optical zoom, 4.0 megapixel digital camera, weighing just 280 grams. It's an all-in-one camera solution for photographers who want the widest focal length range plus manual and automatic controls in a rugged and portable digital camera. The 10X optical zoom lens has a 35mm equivalent zoom range of 38mm to 380mm. Olympus introduced the first-ever Ultra Zoom digital camera four years ago, and has since produced increasingly robust and feature-rich models.

If you are looking for a 10x zoom, why not come to the founder of the Ultra Zoom range? Thanks to its longstanding experience, you may rely on Olympus for a lens that offers superior performance. The very bright (f2.8 - 3.7), high quality optical system of the C-765 Ultra Zoom model comprises eleven elements arranged in seven groups and includes two aspherical lenses to reduce distortion plus an ED element. The latter is normally only found in pro-level SLR cameras and significantly helps reduce chromatic aberration.

This model is not only perfect for distant objects, but also lets you shoot from just 3cm away to create fascinating macro photos. Great quality prints are assured - even in sizes up to A4. This is achieved by pixel counts of 4 million pixels as well as the improved image processor TruePic Turbo, which perfects photographic quality in terms of sharpness, contrast and colour brilliancy.

The C-765UZ features an improved image processor called TruePic TURBO, that improves image quality and delivers faster overall processing speeds. TruePic TURBO captures information from all 4.0 million pixels with pixel "micro- smoothing" that delivers clearer and more color-accurate photos. The camera also utilizes PictBridge technology, which allows users to print directly to any PictBridge compatible printer without the use of a computer.

The optimised electronic viewfinder allows - unlike many optical viewfinders - precise framing of the shot, and the resolution of 240,000 pixels means you enjoy a clear picture. Furthermore, so you don't have to take your eye from the subject when shooting, all activated settings are displayed in the electronic viewfinder.

The new Ultra Zoom model is versatile enough to match any user's comfort level. In auto mode, it offers point-and-shoot simplicity for flawless picture taking. For those times when creative expression is desired, the aperture priority, shutter priority or full manual settings allow greater control.

The C-765UZ offers a wide variety of record modes. In full Auto mode, the camera offers basic point-and-shoot simplicity. In Program AE mode, you can have the ease of Auto mode with the ability to change setting for Metering, ISO, etc. The A/S/M symbol on the mode dial gives you access to more advanced controls with Aperture priority, Shutter priority, and Manual exposure modes. The scene program modes provide fully automatic exposure adjustments for Portrait, Sports, Landscape, and Night Scenes. The special "My Mode" feature saves time by allowing users to assign frequently used settings to the mode dial for quick access.

The movie mode enables you to capture video with sound. For instance, you can record the winning goal being scored, accompanied by the jubilation of the crowd. And the USB 2.0 AutoConnect interface ensures file transfer to the computer is now even quicker.

Other controls include Digital ESP multi-pattern and spot metering; six white balance settings (Auto, 4 presets and Manual); multiple flash settings; selectable ISO speeds (Auto, 64, 100, 200, 400) and exposure compensation. The built-in flash offers 5 settings including slow synch to provide a wide range of options.

For newcomers as well as ambitious amateurs alike, the Olympus CAMEDIA C-765 Ultra Zoom model gives the power of 10x zoom at a reasonable price. The camera, which weighs just 280 grams, has the smallest and lightest 10x Ultra Zoom body within that segment. Offering excellent image quality and a broad range of advanced features, it combines versatility and ease of use in one sleek package.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of the bunch, 26 Jul 2004
By Clive Carter (UK Midlands) - See all my reviews

After a week of ownership, I think I can say the following with some authority

Camera/ well laid out, though within moments of opening the packaging, there was a great big thumb print over the screen, so a pack of screen protectors was bought. The supplied strap was too big for me - replaced by a mobile phone short wriststrap. Impressed by the security of doors/hinges/safety catches etc
Very solid feel to camera - After spending this amount of money, I expect first and foremost a reliable product and seem to have got it.

Ease of use/ menu system confused me until I figures out what options were available in each shooting mode, thereafter shot through all options in a manner of seconds. lots of very useful options such as 2in1 (2 halfwidth shots in one frame) panorama (more about that later) and the usual b/w sepia etc. Nothing you could'nt do with software on the pc, but I like to have them on hand. Nice to have the A/S/M mode (allows you to alter setting like an SLR).
Image quality from uncompressed TIFF(5images/64mb) to 680 x 420.(992images/64mb) I stick to SHG 2290 x 1550 (right proportions for 6by4inch (or up to 24by16 without pixelation) prints at full resolution) but only get 21 images on a 64mb card. Will shortly invest in a pair of 256 or 512mb cards. I could use lower res, but then I might as well have bought a lower res camera...
Battery life good - 3 hours shooting (no flash) before the low indicator came on - extra battery a must, I might buy a second spare for a full 9 hours shooting, or 4 hours with flash. Charger quick - 2 hours max, but gets hot(don't they all) and has no way to secure it to something - Mine cable-tied to a metal chair leg - heatsink and out of the way!

Kit supplied - camera, strap, 16mb xd card, quickstart manual(in 6 languages), basic user manual, CDROM(inc full manual) battery, charger, charger lead(EU and UK) usb 2.0 cable, AV out cable

A few points that have arisen. The battery(1090mAh) is pretty good, but there is apparently a 1710mAh battery available. This would be worth tracking down. Only Olympus (not Fujifilm) xd cards are 'panorama' enabled - a feature that locks in all settings for multiple shots, then stitches them together. This can be done better in software, and if you google for the panorama function, there is a hex function on the card that enables panoramic on any make of xd card - at half the price sometimes! PAL and NTSC output both supported.
If you want to fit filters to this camera you are in for a shock - the stated fitting of 45.5mm is on the camera body - not the end of the lens. If you want to fit filters or the macroconverter/teleconverter you have to buy CLA-4 (£20ish), and any filters are then 55mm.

I put the C765 in a lowepro Z30 bag with spare battery and jessops 8 x xd media gelcase, and still had plenty of room left over for third battery, filters in the front pocket, lens cloth, smarties etc (the C765 strap works on the lowepro bag better for me as well...)

Overall - superb image quality, great flexability, and faultless auto mode. Shutter lag less than 1/10 sec easily, Autofocus struggles in low light, but even £1700 cameras do this. Low weight, nice feel - I'm happy I spent the extra money over the equivalent Kodak.

Camera really not suitable for lefthanders - sorry...

    Five stars? oh yes...

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good SLR like compact digital camera, 18 Jul 2004
By A. Orwell "AndyO" (Essex) - See all my reviews
    (REAL NAME)
I spent weeks researching which digital camera to buy. I needed something that was easy to use for the wife (point and shoot), yet had full manual control and plenty of features for when I wanted to play. It also had to have a good zoom and high enough resolution to print quality A4 photo's. After 1 week with the camera I am very pleased with my purchase and can make the following observations.

    The Good
1). Excellent design. The buttons are all in the right place and the camera is very easy to use.
2). The 10x optical zoom is superb. Most big zoom cameras exhibit distortion at high magnification but this is not a problem for the C-765
3). Excellent selection of resolutions and quality settings for taking pictures.
4). Picture quality is stunning when taken in good light conditions.
5). Great Price. There is currently nothing to touch it for features and quality in the sub £300 bracket.
6). Movie quality is excellent and go up to 640x480 resoltion with unlimited recording time.

    The Bad
1). Poor low light autofocusing. Can take several seconds for the camera to lock on to it's target in dim conditions. In very low light sometimes it cannot focus at all when in Auto mode.
2). You NEED a bigger memory card. 16MB just is not enough to take advantage of the higher quality setting of this camera. At 4M pixel (2288x1712) in SHQ mode you can only take 5 pictures before the card is full. In TIFF mode you only get 1. I bought a Fuji 256MB XD card that works fine in this camera and is much cheaper than the official Olympus XD cards.
3). You REALLY NEED an extra battery. Available for around £21 it is essential. The supplied battery takes about 50 pictures with moderate use of the flash.

    Useful Tips
Movies on this camera are taken in Quicktime video format. These offer very good quality but will use up loads of space on your hard disk. To convert them into a more campact and useful avi or mpeg format I suggest using Rad Video Tools which is a freeware product available from http://www.radgametools.com/bnkdown.htm

    Overall Rating
The skimpy memory card and the single battery problem are common among digital cameras in this price bracket so can be forgiven. The poor low light auto focus can also be tolerated as for the most part it just delays the picture taking process (and most people won't even notice it). Overall this is an excellent camera that offers something for everyone and takes exceedingly good pictures.

    5.0 out of 5 stars Olympus C-765 - an excellent choice, 9 Jul 2004
    This camera is absolutely superb.

I originally looked at this camera because I wanted something better than a standard 3x zoom but couldn't afford an SLR with all the associated apparel. The camera is so intuitive that within minutes of charging the battery I was able to take excellent clear images, even in low light without reading the manual. The super-macro mode is incredible, as is the 10x zoom which can be used to great effect, even in low light.

The MOST important feature is the tight aperture range. To those who are confused by this (as I was) it simply means that on full zoom you don't need a long exposure time - this is why high zoom pictures taken in low light often blur so much. The camera is also fully adjustable in the way an SLR is and most of the settings can be manually altered to create some stunning effects. By specifying a long exposure time I got a superb picture of someone asleep on a park bench with blurs of people and dogs around them.

The only problem some may have with this camera is the protruding lens system. This makes the unit less compact than "flat-faced" cameras so it can't be slipped into your pocket, in which case the Olympus mju410 is an excellent alternative (especially as it's weather proof) but only has a 3x zoom.
