Amazon.co.uk Review

A CD is always more compelling when you know it's lifted from the artist's autobiography, and that's certainly the case with Confessions, Usher's first record since 2001's 8701. The Atlanta singer's string of hits over the past decade have been decidedly under-18s rated, almost veering towards teen pop, but he's changed all that on this coproduced offering, which he claims is "the real him". It would be too simplistic to just brand this record a break-up record, chronicling his public split with TLC's Rozonda "Chili" Thomas; it is that, but so much more. It would be more accurate to call this Usher's coming-of-age record, bridging the gap from boy to man, as he navigates the emotional fallout from the disintegration of his relationship and the events that led up to it--real or imagined.

But other than a guilty conscience, it seems unclear why Usher feels compelled to disgorge his secret life, as he documents his infidelities, transgressions and emotional perfidy in the album's prodigious 17 songs that range from insinuating sultry R&B grooves to the decidedly crunky "Yeah", which pairs an insistent keyboard romp with Lil' Jon's assertive beats and Ludacris' rather humid rhymes. This tracks shines all the more since it's the only club track, but you find yourself pining for more, since most of the other songs tend to get bogged down in his lush, feverish balladry. That's not a bad thing, but the disc would have been better served by a few more muscular tracks. --Jaan Uhelszki, Amazon.com

CD Description

'Confessions' is the fourth album from Usher and sees the once squeeky clean boy of R&B get intimate and dirty with hisfans. Produced by a whole host of guests including JermaineDupri, Vidal, and Dre, the album is a mix of the Southern "Crunk" hip hop sound and smooth, mainstream sound of American R&B. The single 'Yeah' featuring Lil' Jon & Ludicris is also included.

5.0 out of 5 stars Keeping R&B Strong, 24 May 2004
By lcollens "Liam" (London, UK) - See all my reviews
Usher's latest contribution "Confessions" is a strong album that should be remembered by the powers that be when it comes to Grammy considerations for nominees.
The album's hit first single "Yeah!" is anomalous on the album as there are not any other club tracks that are bold. However the album is not a wallowing sea of forlorn love songs.
Quite the opposite the title track "Confessions" makes you wander what Usher has been up to since his last album "8701". Atlanta's bravest offers a medley of smooth ballad R&B (Burn; Simple Things) with some head-nodding tracks (Caught Up; Yeah!; Bad Girl)
Most importantly the album is sexually assertive and shows a mature Usher who has grown up since the days of "My Way" with tracks like "bad Girl", "That's What Its Made For" and "Do It To Me".
This is definitely an album to play with friends around BBQ in the summer and should be in everyone's CD wallet sleeve for their car and on heavy rotation in iPods.
I agree with other reviews that the album could do with more of the trademark dance tracks that have become synonymous with Usher for the sake of seeing his ever impressive dancing in music videos. Possibly Confessions has a more important theme of showing a matured Usher which is evident in every track. Worth every penny.

Best Tracks: 1) Yeah! 2) Bad Girl 3) Confessions 4)Do It To Me 5)Caught Up/Throwback

5.0 out of 5 stars In his own league, 13 May 2004
By V. Ryan (London Uk) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Due to his previous album sales and his all round popularity, "Confessions" was hardly going to fail. But this album is one you can buy and look back on in 10 years time thinking that your listening to a classic.

Usher has always been ahead with his soulful/pop/rnb. Add a hint of hip hop mixed with some of the top producers such as - Jermaine Dupri, Jam & Lewis, Just Blaze & Lil John, and your onto a winner.

If you didn't liek the song "Yeah!" then do not let that put you off buying this album. It is straight away the most different track on this set.
The next single "Burn" will be more to a soulful crowds taste. Its a beautiful ballad about a couple breaking up. No doubt you will hear lots of this in the coming weeks.

There are many standout tracks. "Caught Up" is a real party banger which will instantly get you in the mood for a night out.
"Simple Things" is a true Jam & Lewis style track. A real cool beat with a fantastic melody. A chilled track to have loud in the car with the windows down.
"Take Your Hand" is my personal favourite. Its so cool I just wanna dance when I hear it - and I can't even dance. A track to really listen to when you get this album.
The track "Confessions" has three parts - 1, 2 and the bonus at the end. Its the theme of this set with Usher confessing all about playing around with another girl, getting her pregnant in the process. Interesting theme, bit too deep in my honest opinion. The tracks are strong though, and fit in with the overall sound.
"Thats what its made for" is one track I would identify as weak. And believe me its hard to do so as the stregth of the track is quite phenomenal.
Another track to look out for is "Bad Girl" which is just superb. Really enjoyable track on a really enjoyable album.

"Confessions" comes at a time where RnB is the new pop. In the last few years we have seen the emergence of Justin Timberlake who has really hit the charts with this pop/rnb. This is something Usher has been doing for most of his career.
This album is a real gem. The question was always going to be, could Usher come back with the quality that could match "My Way" and "8701" - the answer is an emphatic yes.

What Usher proves with this album is that no one is in his league when it comes to Pop/rnb/soul mixed with his superstar status.

Quality.

4.0 out of 5 stars True "Confessions", 27 Mar 2004
By Burjiz (Schaffhausen, Switzerland) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
"Confessions," the fifth long-player from ATL's Usher Raymond, is more than a new album. It's also a mature step forward and an exercise in self-examination. Here, Usher unloads some serious baggage, ranging from infidelity (the title track and "Truth Hurts"), materialism ("Simple Things"), unwanted pregnancy (the title track again), and failed relationships, particularly his breakup with TLC's Chili. But that's not to say "Confessions" is all drama and no fun. The album is neatly divided between uptempo jams and smooth ballads, and Usher doesn't disappoint on either front. At first listen, I wasn't a huge fan of the kickoff single "Yeah!" (featuring Ludacris and Lil' Jon), but over time, this catchy hip hop-flavored number caught onto me very quickly. Other decent cuts are "Superstar," the Jam & Lewis-produced "That's What It's Made For," and the downtempo groove of the killer closer, "Follow Me." Well produced and with minimal filler (I could have done without the messy "Do it To Me"), "Confessions" lives up to its title thanks to its honest lyrics and its tight production. Grade: B.
