With the Epson Stylus Photo RX600 you can print out stunning, vibrant photos that will impress every time. The built-in 2.5 colour display keeps you in control when you're using the printer's extensive standalone capabilities. The colour LCD is particularly useful for previewing and selecting images before printing, but also acts as the control panel, giving you full access to all settings and functions.

    The RX600 isn't going to win any prizes in a beauty contest, but the ugly grey hulk contains an amazing amount of image processing power. Think of it as an image converter. Where's your image now: on a computer? on a memory card? on paper? in your camera? on a 35mm film strip or transparency? no problem. What do you want to do with it: print it out? save it to your computer or memory card? no problem. It's an all-in-one image processing system.

    The printer comes with the usual MS-Windows software to control everything. However, the really cool thing about this printer is that you can also do everything from the printer itself, using menus on a tiny built-in display. This includes image manipulation (cropping, zooming) and enhancement (brightness, contrast, etc), as well as maintenance tasks like checking ink levels, head cleaning, etc.

    If you want to do some photocopying, there's no need to switch on the computer: just switch on the RX600 and press copy. If you've come back from a weekend away with a camera full of photos, put the memory card in the front, a stack of 10x15 photo paper in the back, and set it printing. Image quality is as good as your local photo lab.

    This also makes the printer ideal for people with non-Microsoft computers, who often find themselves unable to access some printer functions. For some reason, Linux drivers aren't shipped in the box, but can be downloaded from http://www.epkowa.co.jp.

    Any gripes? a built in fax would have been nice, and possibly a cover to hide it away when it's not in use...

    Highly recommended.

    This scanner/printer is a great pleasure to use. It is easy to operate and it scans and prints photographs and graphics to a very high standard. I have had a great time using its many features, including printing directly from my digital camera's xD memory card, PC, USB memory stick. It even prints quality photographs from old positive colour slides and negative films. My wife uses it in the stand-alone mode with no fuss. I use it in the same way often, but like to connect it to my PC to extend its capabilities with the software provided. I would recommend the RX600 to anyone looking for an excellent and not too pricey scanner/printer.

    This is a superb printer and scanner and one of the most user-friendly I've used. I bought this for a 72 year old client of mine, new to computers - I've been trialling it for a few days and have just ordered myself one!

    Things I like:

    1) It operates standalone *or* with the PC. So it can operate very well as a photocopier without the need for the PC to be turned on.

    2) The negative and slide-scanning ability is simply brilliant. Pop in 6 negatives, and you can either have them printed directly, or scan them onto your PC. The results so far are absolutely faultless, and really useful. Again - no need for a PC.

    3) It reads and WRITES to every available memory card. If you scan a photo, for example, you can save it direct to a memory card. Not a vital feature, but useful to have the option. It reads from cards pretty fast, and displays a thumbnail on the screen. Again - no need for a PC. Just choose a thumbnail, and press print!

    4) Indexing is really useful too. Stick in your memory card, and it can print an A4 page of all the prints (thumbnails). Then (optional), you could mark one or more of the photos with a pen, put it on the scanner, press a button...and it'll print copies of the photos. Awesome!

    My only complaint is it's quite slow - but that's to be expected. I'd say this is more of a photo printer, or a photo "box", rather than an "all in one". It does everything related to photos and printing superbly, but I probably wouldn't use it for everyday documents and letters. All in all, it's a brilliant device it's a total bargain
