Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Weather Report, formed in 1970, grew out of the electric rock experiments of the Miles Davis Band typified by the In A Silent Way and Bitches Brew albums. The two leaders, Joe Zawinul on keyboards and tenorist Wayne Shorter and their percussionist Airto Moreira had all been in Davis's bands. Weather Report lasted for 15 years of spectacular music, but it is in their earlier albums such as this one from 1971 that the fundamental impact they had on jazz is best displayed. The band used sophisticated electronic trickery in the studios and, deprived of some of this on the road, it substituted fiery and far out playing in concert. Both aspects are shown here, since the spanking "Vertical Invader" medley and Zawinul's composition "Directions" were recorded in concert in Tokyo, whilst the other tracks were done in the studio. Zawinul always wrote powerful themes and the four included here are good examples. Shorter has another three, and Miroslav Vitous, the band's virtuoso bassist wrote "Crystal", a delicate piece that makes fine use of Shorter's soprano and of the apparently endless effects that Zawinul was able to create. Stimulating and imaginative music that looks as though it will survive the passing of the years. --Steve Voce
