Synopsis
A beautiful film set in the future, a tale of impending divorce for a young couple who manage to rediscover their love. Joaquin Phoenix (GLADIATOR) and Claire Danes (ROMEO+JULIET) play John and Elena who agree to meet up one last time to finalise their divorce. He must meet his world-famous figure-skating wife in a futuristic Manhattan, and accompanies her for a skating premiere, before signing the papers, and then she asks for his help. Sean Penn (MYSTIC RIVER) plays John's brother who's always trying to call him, and all the while the second Ice Age is drawing ever closer, in parts of the world gravity is beginning to fail and dead bodies of the unburied litter the streets. FESTEN director Thomas Vinterberg has created a beautiful, thought-provoking film.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Dream, 10 Jul 2005
This film is about what the director feels in his life, how he perceives life through his eyes, as if in a dream. All wrapped up around what he feels is the most important things about life - Love. I didn't know what to think of the film when it started. At midpoint I was feeling like one of the other reviewers here, that it was a car crash, a disaster. I stuck with it, and by the time the film finished, I was overwhelmed. It is a film of impression, emotion, depth, abstraction, dream...but at it's core is what the title says - "It's All About Love"...

5.0 out of 5 stars It's All Good, 21 Jul 2004
Films generally fall into one of two catergories - predictable and safe, or cutting edge and revolutionary. This is definitely the latter.

A visual journey of art-deco influence and Hitchcockian suspense, it provides romance, manipulation, complexity and disorder in one thrilling dose. Claire Danes is luminous in her role of Elena, Joaquin Phoenix is equally striking as her estranged husband and Sean Penn's cameo is simply perfect.

Thomas Vintenberg (Director) obviously made a conscious decision to create the antithesis of 'Festen' and it works wonders.

It's All About Love is beautifully bizarre, massively intruiging and incredibly resonant. It may not be conventional, but this is a purposeful move and has originality at its heart.

This is an absolute must for anybody who loves cinematic genius.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional art, 18 Oct 2006
By Beyond1980 (Eindhoven, Netherlands) - See all my reviews
I agree 100% with Trish, this movie IS like a dream! Respect it for that. If you are someone who needs concrete answers, avoid it. If you are into the surrealistic realm of life...art, visions, progressive exploring music/sounds, paintings, moods, atmospheres...this is your movie. It happened to me aswell that during the movie I thought about this movie as ''going nowhere'' and ''trying to impress and confuse too much''
.....but watch it till the end. I watched the end 3 times in a row and then it was clearer than ever to me that this movie IS about confusion and a cold, strange, harsh future. Warn yourself for a future in a digital age where everything is fast and depthless...the core of this movie is a gift for your heart. This movie needs an OPEN MIND, see it more as surrealistic art like a painting and find the answers you need to find. That is what this art is about. If you do not respect it for what it IS (and for what the director created on purpose!)..go watch a James Bond movie.

1.0 out of 5 stars NO! It's a disastrous, mangled CAR CRASH of a movie!
This film is an absolutely APPALLING, DREADFUL waste of talent on all levels. The script is a complete mess and there are excruciatingly clumsy attempts at characterisation. Read more
