Manufacturer's Description
ARCHOS offers music fans an ultra-small 20 GB MP3 player / recorder with a photo viewer. Featuring an icon-based interface for easy navigation, the Gmini 220 allows you to store 5000 songs and view photos on the grayscale, 2.5" LCD screen. The compact Gmini 220 (only weighs 6 ounces / 170 grams) is a flexible and affordable solution to have all your music with you all the time.

The Gmini 220 is incredibly compact and lightweight. Measuring a mere 2.66" x 3.07" x 0.9" (67.5 x 78 x 23 mm) and weighing only 6 oz (170 grams), this MP3 player & recorder packs in the features. Enjoy the Photo Viewer, 2.5" LCD, new graphical user interface, microphone, and the ARCLibrary and Double Browser to easily organize your music files... all in the palm of your hand.

The Gmini 220 features an entirely redesigned Graphic User Interface (GUI), which clearly displays icons for easier navigation and usability, and improved music file organization and synchronization on the device through the ARCLibrary. It has never been easier to quickly access the function you want by clicking on the specific icon.

The Double Browser is an easy-to-use music file management system. Enjoy the ARCHOS Double Browser to easily organize your music files. This unique music management functionality allows you to delete, rename, copy, move files and even create folders directly on the Gmini without using a computer.

Enjoy full recording functionalies with the Gmini 220. Record up to 500 albums from an audio source - that's 5000 songs or over 300 hours of music! You can also use the Gmini to do easy voice recordings.

The Gmini 220 goes way beyond music. Not only is it an MP3 player and recorder, but also a photo wallet allowing you to store and view up to 200,000 photos on the 2.5" grayscale, blue backlit LCD (or any data files from a Compact Flash). No need to have multiple memory cards for your camera. Using the Compact Flash IO port on the top, you can quickly and easily transfer your memory card into the Gmini. And thanks to the unique Double Browser, you can organize and store images into any desired folder. Make instant transfers to and from your PC, with no special software required.

Using the included MUSICMATCH Jukebox Plus Software, you can convert your entire CD collection into MP3 format and transfer it to your Gmini through an ultra-fast USB 2 interface. Songs are automatically tagged and arranged according to album, artist, title, etc.

After synchronizing with MusicMatch, you can easily organize your music files on the Gmini by album, artist or title without using a computer. However, you still have the possibility to organize content on the Gmini through the Disk Brower, such as with Windows Explorer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great travel accessory, 20 Jul 2004
By Erik (Jersey) - See all my reviews
I frequently go on long trips and have found it frustrating to keep changing the music on the way. So I wanted an MP3 player.

On my long trips, I normally take well over 512MB of photos (digital SLR). At around £100 for each memory card, it's certainly worth spending £200 on a hard drive device.

So Archos has put the lot into one device and have set a new standard for mp3 players.

The double browser is very good for moving files around the device and the compact flash card. Once the device is plugged into a USB port, it acts as an external hard drive. You use your normal windows file manager to copy files around. Windows XP requires no drivers to see the device. I do not think that Intel machines charge the device, so you'll have to plug in the charger if the battery is almost flat. I would like to know whether Apple machines can charge the device over the USB connection.

Say that you have taken 100s of photos and not you want to develop 20 but you are not near a computer. The black and white (not many shades of grey) is just enough to view the images and decide if you want to copy it back to a compac flash card to hand over to a developer. Using your camera to view photos in colour is an acceptable compromise, seeing as a colour LCD is far more expensive than the black-and-white one.

    Some negatives on the device:
The battery is not removable and I can not find a 5V car charger for USB plugs (this device charges through it's USB connection, the Charger has an adapter to allow you to plug in both the charger and the USB cable at the same time)
Archos has a bad reputation for post sales service, something I imagine will improve soon.
It may be my imagination, but it seems that sometimes pressing one button actually results in the device performing a different function.
The line-in recording and direct mp3 encoding introduces a noticable amount of noise. But hey, if you want to record usign the Line-in, then you must expect more noise than if you do a digital copy on the computer!

So in all, I really rate this device. It looks good, it performs well, it's compact, it compliments my photography hobby and it plays good music. For it's cost, I would say that this device beats the other mp3 players and photo storage devices that is currently on the market.

Do your own research, but I'm sure you'll return to this product!

    5.0 out of 5 stars 2 month further, 7 Jul 2004
    By A Customer
I have now had my Gmini 220 for 3 months and it is now getting better and better.
I was pleased with it's MP3 functions, especially the fact that I did not need to hold all my MP3s on my PCs hard drive.
But since my last review I have been away and the photo wallet has come into it's own. Alright I neded to use an adapter as my camera takes SD cards. But it was great to know I could copy my photos over to the Gmini and free up the photo storage on my camera. This meant I could take as many pictures as I wanted and I was able to listen to music while moving from point to point. Yes my photos were could only be viewed in black and white, but I knew they were stored safely and could be downlaoded to my PC on my return.

In short a product that does what it says it will do.

    5.0 out of 5 stars Move over Apple !, 25 Jun 2004
By Barry Cullen (Dublin, Ireland) - See all my reviews
I bought the Gmini 2 months ago after spending a considerable amount of time pondering over whether to buy an Ipod or not. Let me tell you I'm delighted with the Gmini. I have a digital camera also and really needed somewhere to store digital photos as well as data files from my laptop. Here are my comments about the Gmini. The compact flash reader is very fast, just pop in the card and click transfer all. The whole idea of drag and drop MP3 files instead of synchronized transfers is fantastic. The sound quality is great. It's absolutely tiny for a 20GB capacity. On the downside the menu isn't as slick as the Ipod but it's not bad. The back light really drains the battery and the resolution for viewing pictures isn't great but it serves its purpose. Overall, a great product, well done Archos.
