5.0 out of 5 stars A legend in the making, 9 May 2006
The most surprising thing about this excellent album is that Jack Rose isn't a big name. If there is any justice in the world, however, he soon will be. He is a complete master of the acoustic guitar, who you get the feeling could do anything that he felt like with. Red Horse is a long, chilled out affair, which seems to be just trickling by but builds an incredibly slow, powerful tension, which then finds beautiful release. Contrast this with the following track, a cover of Blind Willie Johnson's short but powerful blues masterpiece Dark was the Night, Cold was the Ground. Here, Rose shows that he can play with earthy passion, and manages to pay homage to the original without being stifled by it. The rest of the album comfortably fulfills the high level of the first two tracks, with Linden Ave Stomp standing out for its wonderfully uplifting syncopation. If you like instrumental guitar music, buy this album. If you don't, buy this album, and let it open your ears. Jack Rose is a genuine guitar master, who deserves to be revered just as much as the stars of former generations.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Album But Not Recommended as a First Buy., 9 Oct 2007
By William J. Walker "Billyjay" (England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
I got this album having been blown away by the quality of his more recent "Kensington Blues" which, I would say, is the better album. I've seen him referred to as 'the natural heir of John Fahey'. He certainly manages to evoke the memory of Fahey, Basho and (Sandy)Bull, blending a Mississippi blues drawl, folky americana, eastern and other more obscure influences to create wonderfully rich pieces of, at times, almost classically symphonic structure. All this is combined with the supreme technical virtuosity of, say, Leo Kottke.

This release compiles his two early LPs (Red Horse, White Mule and Opium Musick) recorded for the Eclipse label, that had become impossible to get hold of. Not surprisingly there is a lot of music here which makes it quite difficult to take in. So intense is the listening experience, it can be almost draining to listen to the whole album in one sitting, but by goodness it can be a rewarding one.

There are sprawling epics and a couple of delightful vignettes. Overall I would say this has a slightly 'cooler' feel than his later work, with an, at times, almost hypnotic quality, particularly on the longer tracks. Most importantly this album is a 'grower' and requires some perseverance.

This is an excellent album but I would strongly suggest getting "Kensington Blues" first and if you enjoy that as much as I did you won't need further persuasion to buy this.
