4.0 out of 5 stars Same old, 22 Jan 2009

I've been an SLF fan since I was at school. After getting all their stuff on vinyl and then on cd, I just sat back for a decade and listened to it( on and off). Came across Flags and Emblems whilst having a poke about on Amazon and thought I'd give it a punt. The earlier stuff is a lot angrier than this, but this is more melodic. I like all of it. F&E's doesn't disappoint.

3.0 out of 5 stars Dated but fun, 6 Aug 2008
By Robert Lawes (UK) - See all my reviews

Ok so the negative stuff first. This album has dated badly. Songs like the Cosh which name checks the poll tax and Beirut Moon which was an appeal for more action to help release John Mcarthy who was held hostage in Beirut now sound so out of date.

That said there are several positives from this album. The production is quite good and infact in many ways it's a better more coherant album than "Now then".

Several of the tracks are very good indeed by SLF standards. "No Surrender" (not as antagonistic as it sounds) and "It's a long way to paradise" still pack a punch.

This album saw the debut of Bruce Foxton in the group and there are plenty of signs of his bass work on many of the songs.

At the time it was a strong return from SLF and perhaps deserved more recognition than it eventually got.

Jake Burns claims that "Beirut Moon" was banned by the BBC for being too political and that they were booked to play the ITV Chart Show but that fell through and John Mcarthy was released before the song could have any major air play.

All in all not a bad album but be prepared for the very dated subject matter and sound.

4.0 out of 5 stars Welcome back, 26 Jul 2009
By Dr. Mark Cathcart - See all my reviews

Again, I have rewoken my love for SLF with this album, whilst not as good as "guitar and drum" this album refreshes a lot of energy in the world of music.
Gone are the soppy "soft tracks" and instead we are dealt with good old rocking smashers
Most tracks have a melody and are instantly catching, the "under a Beruit moon" is probably the quickest entry track with its use of vintage BBC reporting to recount the kidnapping of John Mccarthy and then you are treated to a rock assualt with its harmonious catchy chorus.
Possibly you could consider this album to be over produced and the sound quality is superb, gone are the days of the Rough Trade / Good Vibrations scratchy quality of the recordings. Is this a gain or loss, you decide!
Overall 9/10, cant really quibble with this offering as it touches all the right places and notes, possibly lacks some of the raw SLF but hey there are many live albums out there that you can buy as well.
Well done and it really is great to have these boys back recording such stunning tracks!
