Kimberley, A True Winner., 8 Aug 2004
By A Customer
Kimberley Locke - a name a few of you may be familiar with, Kimberley's natural vocal ability and charm won over audiences in American Idol 2 - she was renowned as "the one who was always in the bottom 2" - but against the odds, Miss Locke came third, and got herself a record deal with Curb Records. "One Love" is the title of her debut album; it was a name that her forum had input in. 8th World Wonder: We begin with the debut single, a pop-rock track that is still going strong in America; it reached more than 50,000 spins - an achievement for someone who has waited until after her American Idol days. As for the song - I personally really like it; it's a great way to kick off a great album. 9.5/10 Have You Ever Been In Love? : Staying with the pop-rock vibe, "Have You Ever Been in Love" really shows Kim's natural quality, her voice could have easily got lost in this song, but it somehow works really well. Electric guitars and drums are very much present in this song, it's another smashing track. 10/10 Wrong: The second US single, has already been compared to Kelly's "Miss Independent", and again continues the pop-rock vibe that suits Kim's voice so much. Co-written by Kaci, it's bound to be loved by the masses of Kaci fans worldwide! All in all, this shouldn't have been the second single, although it is growing on me - there is better, I just think it's too similar to Kelly's "Miss Independent". 9/10 I Could: At first, I didn't take to this track, now however it's one of my favourites! The song, is about finding the one for you, and knowing they are right for you. It really is a gorgeous track, and could definitely be a possibility for a future single. 9.5/10 Without you (featuring Clay Aiken): Clay Aiken came second in American Idol 2 - this is of course where he met Kimberley, they are the best of friends now. And this track definitely is a wise choice, Clay's diehard fans definitely will be happy with this song; it's a gorgeous ballad and is up there with the best of the songs on Clay's album. The first ballad is a nice change from the pop-rock, and it's a standout track for me. Kimberley and Clay both shine on this track, for anyone who criticises Idol for producing "Karaoke singers", please tell me what Karaoke do you go to? Because I wouldn't mind hearing singers like these two! 10/10 Its Alright: The first RnB track was also a choice for second single - apparently. I am glad this wasn't chosen and it would have been worse case scenario, if it was (out of the three possible options). It's a good track and it's nice for Kim to mix it up, and show how versatile she is. 8.5/10 Coulda Been: What can I say? This track has it all! It's probably the coolest song on the album; I could rave and rave about this song. If this doesn't get a release, there really is no justice in this world! The production in this track is wonderful, everything just fits perfectly. Guy Roche please give yourself a huge pat on the back, not only did he produce this track, he co-wrote it. Its pitch perfect, I could really go on and on about how good this track is - do yourself a favour and check it out! 10/10 Before: The second ballad on the album is the stunning "Before"; the emotion in Kimberley's voice makes this track something so special. You really do feel the sheer emotion in her voice. The verses are extremely sad, it's a gorgeous song - and Kimberley shows star quality in her voice with this song. 10/10 You've changed: Kimberley shows great promise with this RnB number, its definitely another standout - Kimberley not only shows promise with her vocal ability, but also with her writing ability, the only song she has a role in writing the song, but she definitely pulls it off. The one thing I look forward to her next album is the fact she'll have more involvement with writing the tracks. 10/10 Now I Can Fly: This is a nice track, but for me it's very forgettable - unfortunately, albeit it's a good track - but for me this one just doesn't match the quality of the 9 songs before it. 7/10 Bonus Tracks I Can't Make You Love Me: I must admit, I really think it's an average song - I really have not taken a fancy to it at all, for me it's my least favourite track on the album. 5/10 Somewhere Over the Rainbow: I was really just expecting the same kind of set up to the original, however I was pleasantly surprised when I heard it on the 8WW single, her take on this song is unique, but it's fresh. Kimberley hasn't just done a carbon copy of this song, she has turned it into her own song - I really admire that, it's not the best song on the album - but for a bonus track is perfect. 8.5/10 Overall Rating: This album is flawed, I am not saying it isn't - but when it's on form, it really is a stunning album. There is only really one song that I think is average - to have five 10/10 ratings is an achievement, this album was definitely worth the money, and I highly recommend it to anyone who is thinking of buying it, Kimberley is a breath of fresh air - and she has proven that she has the talent to be an Idol. 9/10
