What can I say about this film other than the narrative is one of the most exciting in film history...and based on a true story!

Being old enough to remember the Berlin Wall when it was still used to contain a country, this film gives you a dark insight into the grim incarceration of East Berliners, and their desperate attempts to escape, no matter what the cost.
The film follows the lives of two families , who decide to escape using a hot-air balloon manufactured by themselves.
Forever fearing arrest by the authorities, under scrutiny by neighbours, they have to calculate a plan to reach the other side of the wall.
A tense & thrilling story of courage and determination which truly pays homage to all those who succeeded and failed the treacherous journey to West Berlin and freedom.

l remember watching this movie as a kid and really enjoyed it. Years later l bought the excellent music score by the late great Jerry Goldmsith which prompted me to purchase the movie and relive that excitement.
The movie was made in the late 1970's before the fall of the Berlin wall and tells the true story of two families who plan a dangerous and elaborate escape from Communist East Germany using a homemade hot air balloon.
The performances are very good especially John Hurt who gives a very moving performance. The story itself is very well told and exciting and thankfully leaves out any 'Disneyisk' sentimentality. The picture transfer is not the greatest but dont let that put you off. Its a good wholesome Disney movie about courage, Family and triumph of the human spirit

As previous reviewer said, I too remember the impact of the Berlin Wall, not it's construction but it's existence and eventual destruction. As a parent I can only imagine the desperation those families felt to give their children security, freedom and opportunity. I salute them and their bravery - during times of self-pity this film reminds me how lucky I am to live in Britain. Lovely story of triumph over adversity - it won't be everyone's favourite film but it is mine.
