5.0 out of 5 stars Finally a step in the right direction for Alanis Morissette, 19 Jun 2004
By Louis Smith (Southampton, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: So Called Chaos (Audio CD)
I loved Jagged Little Pill. Even though I was only eight when my mum brought it, I never found it challenging and I loved the catchy songs. My family and I used to sing along to in the car on journeys, I bet my friends used to think I was really weird! I immediately went out and brought the subsequent Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, however I didn't really like the darker more lesbianic idea she was promoting at the time. I was only 9 or 10.. After SFIJ I didn't really follow her direction, but I brought 'Unplugged' and I was thrilled, but it was more of the same JLP and a few new tracks, which were ok and far as an eleven year old can tell. In retrospect I didn't expect anything less from JLP due to the legendry producer Glen Ballard at his peak. I hesitated when buying 'Under Rug Swept' but I loved the single that she released. I always secretly wanted her to get to #1 in the UK charts and I scanned the radio to try and find her playing on a local station but the closest she got to #1 was with 'Ironic' in 1995.
'So Called Chaos' is the much-delayed successor to JLP in the sense that Ms. Morissette has progressed in a direction that I prefer. Her upbeat melodies juxtapositioned with her insightful lyrics exposing her incredible vernacular and broad range emotion make for a brilliant and innovative combination, last seen in JLP. With incredibly uplifting tracks like 'Eight Easy Steps' which could even appear in the next 'Legally Blonde' movie, show a more positive aspect to her music, the single 'Everything' which has been more popular on MTV than any other Alanis Morissette since the 'naked' video, 'Doth I Protest Too Much', 'Out Is Through', 'Excuses', 'Knees of My Bees' and 'This Grudge' shine out of the album which are a return to a happier place. If you're looking for a return to Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, it's not here. If you're looking for a fantastic follow up to 1995's successful Jagged Little Pill you've found it. It's been a while, but after 9 years, it's easy to tell her music has progressed to a place where she's wiser, happier and more aware than she's ever been in delivering an incredible album like this.

5.0 out of 5 stars So-called Chaos, 3 Jun 2004
This review is from: So Called Chaos (Audio CD)
Think Alanis Morissette, and you'll be initially presented with mental images of a naive cuckoo with long hair and a mysteriously-spelt surname who thought she could be revolutionarily unique in the music industry by abreacting her feelings with rhyming words, a dash of xylophonic mix and naturalistically writing her lyrics in someone else's kitchen. Those crazy Canadians, eh? Add "Ironic". Add more hair. Add more feelings. Take away the rhyming structure. Add a list of older lovers and burned fingers. Add some grudge; a lot of it. Then suddenly some international publicity. After "Jagged Little Pill" being jaggedly rodded through your ear, "Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie" made you run for the etymological encyclopaedia. "Under Rug Swept" left you wanting to do exactly that and perhaps even nail this emotionally excessive girl to the underside of wooden floors. "Feast on Scraps"? Here comes the grudge again? No, here's where we add resurrection of her positive self-image. Positive as in uniquely, enviably insightful. The red carpet was rolled out for "So-Called Chaos" and reporters were ready to critisise its unglamorous and so-two-minutes-ago dress, but it arrived prestigiously and stepped out of the limo without too much knickers-exposure. The songs represent the discrepancy between instinctual behaviour and socially accepted behaviour. Without preachy Freudian analysis, they make you think about little things as sideways glances, towel-throwing, brave faces and how day-to-day experiences are usually linked to unsexiness, self-protectionism and fear of abandonment. Morissette "So-Called Chaos" is exactly not so-called that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vintage Alanis, 3 Jun 2004

Just over 40 minutes long, only a compact 10 songs, and yet... She may have lost some of the raw anger of 'Jagged Little Pill' - but she's matured brilliantly in this album, and every song can be your own favourite masterpiece - if the mood strikes you just right.
Her writing skills are still way above any of the competition (does she have any?) and her voice never sounded better. Or truer.
