The singing is generally excellent (Mingardo is sublime), but this set is a massive disappointment for two main reasons: Curtis's band is audibly undernourished (7 violins) and most grievously, 9 da capo arias suffer from having the B-sections and the repeats axed (Mingardo's performance is especially wounded and ripped to shreds). Curtis explains in the accompanying booklet that this enabled the performance to fit on to 2 discs to be more "marketable." But true Handelians, who are the only ones likely to purchase it, would have gladly paid for a 3-disc set, and one wonders why DHM couldn't sell a 3-set recording for a 2-set price. Considering that there will not likely be another recording, DHM takes us back to the bad old days of the 1960s, when Handel's operas suffered wholesale cuts which had the effect of destroying their structural and dramatic integrity.

I give this recording only 3 stars with some reluctance as the vocal performances are generally very good indeed and it may be the only recording of this much neglected piece for some time. For that very reason however it is infuriating that for the sake of an extra CD, Alan Curtis and DHM decided to mutilate the opera by cutting out several 'B' sections and repeats as well as (more forgiveably) quite a lot of recitative. Curtis explains in the programme notes the reasons for this but I can't help feeling that Handelians (for who else would buy this obscure work?) would have paid for that extra CD in order to have a complete recording. Frankly, one misses those 'B' sections and repeats - the arias don't sound right without them!

Sara Mingardo is just wonderful in the title role - the aria that finishes Act 2 is divine! Simone Kermes' voice is an acquired taste but she is undoubtedly dramatic and ensures that Adelaide is no wilting heroine. Steve Davislim sings beautifully (too beautifully?) as the villian Berengario as does Hilary Summers as his milksop son Ildeberto. In the almost ridiculously malevolent role of Matilde, Sonia Prina is in fine, firm voice and full of character and the bass role has some really good stuff to sing and is well delivered by Vito Priante.

Curtis' small band play well but does sound weedy in places. This is good but it could have been so much better. One really also needs Paul Goodwin's highlights disc on OEHMS as a supplement to really appreciate this under-rated work - it's a pity his team did not record the whole thing!
