Synopsis
Michel Blanc's adaptation of Joseph Connolly's novel SUMMER THINGS/VACANCES ANGLAISES romps through scene after scene of riotous romantic upheaval and treachery. The story follows two eccentric families on holiday together in Touquet, France. One family, however, is privately bankrupt, and can only afford a caravan on the outskirts of town. Casual infidelity and small deceits are the norm, as almost each character, young and old, becomes involved in a summer tryst. Class issues figure widely throughout the film, pressurising relationships to their breaking point, and even driving one of the characters to suicide. Poignant moments of real loneliness complement the silly madness of sex and love, and become the motivation for utter debauchery. Unexpected attractions between disparate characters reinvent the bourgeoisie, or bringing true desire to the surface. As the holiday comes to a close, everyone either seems more resolved about their lives and loves, or driven to new extremes of psychosis, long past help. An incredible ensemble cast makes this well-written film memorable, including director Michel Blanc as Jean-Pierre, a deluded husband, and Charlotte Rampling as Elisabeth, the wise but vulnerable matriarch. Although the film flip-flops between earnest and comedic problems of money, monogamy, and longing, there is clearly only one way to escape from these pressures, and that is to partake in some insatiable bed-hopping. A fizzing French farce.

DVD Description
Summer Things is a hilarious blend of small-town snobbery, insatiable lust and infidelity. When Elizabeth's (Charlotte Rampling) wayward husband Bertrand (Jacques Dutronc) finds every excuse to stay at home in Paris with his mistress, Elizabeth invites friend Julie on holiday instead. She's a single mother desperate for holiday romance, but with a screaming baby in tow. On the other side of town their hard-up neighbours are roughing it at a nearby caravan park while Elizabeth's and Bertrand's nymphomaniac daughter, Emile, is partying stateside with boyfriend Kevin, unaware that he's embezzled the money from her father's firm to pay for the trip…

3.0 out of 5 stars Sexy, funny and heart warming - it's not just the weather that's hot., 24 May 2006
By B. Grime "bjg5000" (Lancashire) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
'Summer Things' is witty, very sexy, thought provoking, smart and sizzles in every way. Packed with so many interesting ingredients it can't fail to be enjoyable - and it doesn't. It's an entertaining look at life, love, lust and infidelity in a wonderfully absurd and hilarious farce of epic proportions - and it all begins when rich housewife Elizabeth (Charlotte Rampling) takes a summer holiday that proves to be unforgettable for all concerned...

When her unfaithful husband Bertrand (Jacques Dutronc) makes excuses to stay in Paris to enjoy an ongoing affair with transsexual Rena, Elizabeth sets off for her vacation at an upmarket seaside resort taking friend Julie for company. Single mother Julie (Clotilde Courau) has her own ideas on how to enjoy the break - desperate for a steamy holiday romance she's in no mood to allow her screaming baby or their hard-up neighbours (who just happen to be roughing it in a nearby trailer park) dampen her enthusiasm for some passion. Spicing things up further, other guests at Elizabeth's posh hotel who become entangled in the frantic goings on are depressed jealous husband Jean-Pierre (played by Director Michel Blanc), his exasperated wife Lulu (Carole Bouquet) and serial womaniser Maxime (Vincent Elbaz). Hormonal antics are also taking place in Chicago where Elizabeth and Bertrand's promiscuous teenage daughter Emilie (Lou Doillon) parties wildly with boyfriend Kevin who is paying for their fun with money embezzled from Bertrand's firm. Did I mention the word farce? The crazier it becomes just adds to the enjoyment because no matter how complex things get, this wild bunch of holidaymakers wont let anything get in their way of their constant search for pleasure...

Blanc cleverly links the various story lines. Well acted by an impressive cast, `Summer Things' succeeds as a witty farce of mistaken identities, amorous (mis) adventures and emotional deceit. Beneath the sexual frivolity, dark humour, unearthing of family secrets, snappy lines and farcical encounters the film has an appealingly melancholic heart. Sharp with plenty of frolics and fun `Summer Things' has depth and is well worth the trip.

4.0 out of 5 stars Slight as a Summer breeze, and just as pleasant..., 7 Nov 2006
By Trevor Willsmer (London, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
Summer Things/Embrassez Quiz Vous Voudrez is one of those films that probably shouldn't really work but does. Based on a British novel by Julian Barnes following various middle class characters (upwardly and downwardly mobile) on a holiday that takes in various affairs, jealousies and suicide attempts, it's a light confection that works surprisingly well, not least because people DON'T do the right thing (when estate agent Jacques Dutronc finds out an employee has reduced the price on a desperately short of cash friend's house for a backhander, he does nothing to rectify the situation). Much of what happens is fairly predictable, with the exception of Charlotte Rampling keeping her clothes on for once, but the performances are strong and Michel Blanc's direction keeps it all on track. Nothing profound, but surprisingly likeable.

Extras are fairly light - just a trailer and a photo montage with an audio essay by the director.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Comedy.!, 27 Oct 2007
By Edna Little. (Stockport, England.) - See all my reviews
This is a suberb French comedy. The best I^ve ever seen, and I own alot of French films. From the recuring ^Green Dress^ to the desperate husbands pathetic attempt at suicide. What do you do when you go on vacation to the south of France with your rich friends, who don^t know that you are now bancrupt. And you desperately don^t want them to find out, incase you^re no longer excepted as one of them. Excellent script, excellent acting throughout. A very witty film. Highly recommended.
